Conor McGregor

Fight fans never know for sure whether Conor McGregor is an MMA athlete or a boxer. Nor is it clear these days whether he’s retired or still active. And, now, observers are trying to sort out whether he’s been arrested or not.

McGregor’s vacation with his family on a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea has been more eventful than he intended.

Authorities in Corsica interviewed and released former UFC champion Conor McGregor this week after allegations of “attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition,” according to multiple reports.

Local authorities released a statement to Agence France-Presse to clarify after an initial report stated McGregor had been detained on indecent exposure allegations. Their description of the circumstances made no mention of McGregor being detained or arrested.

“Following a complaint filed on September 10 denouncing acts that could be described as attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition, Mr. Conor Anthony Mac Gregor (sic) was the subject of a hearing by the police,” the prosecutor’s office wrote in the statement.

Emmanuelle Ramon, McGregor’s legal representative in Corsica, told AFP that no charges had been filed after the Sept. 10 episode. He termed the allegations “abusive,” adding that the fighter had been released.

Later, manager Audie Attar issued a statement to MMA Fighting: “I am irate and putting out a warning loud and clear: Conor McGregor is not and will not be a target for those seeking to score a headline or a payday.”

Conor McGregor, 32, who announced earlier this year that he has retired from fighting, has been on a vacation cruise in the Mediterranean with fiancée Dee Devlin and their two children.

The unspecified incident took place in a bar. But the statement by authorities in Corsica provided no other details about the alleged offenses, the New York Post reported.

McGregor has run up against legal problems several other times in recent years. Most notably, he and members of his entourage attacked a bus carrying rival Khabib Nurmagomedov from the UFC 223 media day in Brooklyn on April 3, 2018. McGregor hurled a metal dolly at the bus, injuring two fighters with flying glass.

He was charged with three counts of assault and one count each of criminal mischief, menacing, and reckless endangerment. McGregor subsequently pleaded no contest to a count of disorderly conduct.

McGregor was charged last year in his native Ireland after being taped punching a bar patron. He was charged with assault, entered a guilty plea, and paid a fine, MMA Fighting reported.

Being questioned in Corsica was just one more bizarre twist to Conor McGregor’s yacht trip this week. On Friday, McGregor tweeted about being tracked down by a representative of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, who administered a drug test under the UFC’s anti-doping program.

McGregor defeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in January and announced in June that he was retired. Observers continue to speculate that the retirement is likely a ploy in negotiations with UFC president Dana White. The USADA continues to test athletes until they file formal notification of their retirement.
