Lakers Hire JJ Redick As Next Head Coach

Redick and the Lakers have agreed to terms on a four-year deal to become the next head coach.

General manager Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss met with Redick over the weekend, and conversations continued throughout this week.

Per Wojnarowski, Pelinka offered the position on Thursday morning.

“Pelinka became sold on Redick's ability to connect with players and his basketball IQ and believes surrounding Redick with an elite coaching staff will help shorten his learning curve into his first coaching job,” Wojnarowski reported.

In early June, Shams Charania reported that Redick was the frontrunner in the Lakers' coaching search. However, the organization pivoted to UConn's Dan Hurley, who turned down a six-year, $70 million contract to coach the Lakers.

Redick became one of the lead NBA analysts for ESPN, calling the 2024 NBA Finals alongside Mike Breen and Doris Burke.

Los Angeles Lakers Move Forward With Redick

Redick inherits a Lakers team that finished 47-35 in 2023-2024, ending with a loss to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs.

LeBron James, who started a podcast with Redick this past season, has a player option that must be exercised by June 29. All signs point to James opting out of his contract, though he will likely re-sign with the Lakers.

Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, D'Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Gabe Vincent are all under contract for next season.

In next week's NBA draft, the Lakers hold the No. 17 pick and the No. 55 pick.
