Dolphins Sign Veteran DE Calais Campbell

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms on a contract with defensive end Calais Campbell, according to NFL Network. Campbell, who turns 38 on Sept. 1, is set to enter his 17th NFL season.

Campbell was selected 50th overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 draft out of Miami (FL).

The 6-foot-8, 282-pound pass rusher played his first nine seasons (2008-16) with the Cardinals before making stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-19), Baltimore Ravens (2020-22), and Atlanta Falcons (2023).

Through 244 career games (225 starts), Campbell has totals of three interceptions, 58 passes defended, and 17 forced fumbles. Plus, he has 105.5 sacks, 865 combined tackles, 175 tackles for loss, and 254 quarterback hits.

In the 2023 season with the Falcons, he played in every game for the first time since 2019 and had 6.5 sacks, his highest mark since 2019. He recorded 56 tackles, 17 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery.

It was his best statistical season since 2019, when he made the Pro Bowl with the Jaguars.

Campbell, a native of Denver, Colorado, now reunites with Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Edwards, who coached the Ravens' defensive line when Campbell played for them in 2021 and 2022.

Miami signed veteran Shaq Barrett in March and strengthened its pass rush in the draft. The Dolphins selected Chop Robinson from Penn State in the first round and Mohamed “Mo” Kamara in the fifth from Colorado State.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Campbell is tied with Elvis Dumervil for No. 32 on the official all-time sacks list (since 1982) and 48th on the unofficial list (since 1960), with 105.5 total sacks.

Campbell has been a first-team All-Pro once (2017 with Jacksonville). That same season, he was named the PFWA NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

He has also made six Pro Bowl appearances: 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

According to Pro-Football-Reference, Campbell is a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team as well.

The Dolphins are coming off an 11-6 season. It was Miami's best regular season since 2008. However, the team suffered a wild-card round loss to the eventual Super Bowl LVIII champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Miami is aiming to snap its 23-year playoff victory drought, which is the longest active drought in the NFL.
