Falcons Claim OL Andrew Stueber Off Waivers

The Atlanta Falcons claimed offensive lineman Andrew Stueber off waivers on Tuesday, in efforts to add depth to their pass protection unit. The New England Patriots waived the 6-foot-6, 318-pound guard on Monday.

Stueber, who turns 25 on July 1, was selected 245th overall by New England in the seventh round of the 2022 draft out of Michigan.

He missed his rookie season with a torn hamstring and spent last season on the practice squad.

The Connecticut native has yet to make his NFL debut.

As a graduate student with the Wolverines in 2021, he helped lead the offensive line with the fewest sacks allowed (10) and third-fewest tackles for loss (27) nationally.

Although Stueber never made a regular-season appearance with the Patriots, then-head coach Bill Belichick praised the second-team All-American prior to the 2023 season for making progress.

“He’s, like, 50 times further along than where he was last year,” Belichick said. “He got hurt before we even got to rookie minicamp and basically missed the entire season, other than a few practices at the end of the year. He’s had a full offseason. He’s good to go. It’s good to have him out here. He gets better every day.”

Stueber started every game over his final two seasons with the Wolverines. He made 20 career starts at right tackle and two at right guard. Plus, he made seven appearances as a reserve offensive lineman.

“He really missed a full year of football, but [through] the reps and the training, he’s kind of rebuilt his body a little bit,” Belichick added.

“He’s definitely improved in that area — strength, overall conditioning, body composition, all that. He was a good football player at Michigan. ... And he’s gotten a lot of reps out here. He’s done well with them.”

At the moment, the Falcons seem content with their starting offensive line.

Therefore, Stueber is probably going to be part of a competition for backup roles in Atlanta this summer.
