Giants Sign Second-Round S Tyler Nubin to Four-Year Deal

The New York Giants officially signed second-round safety Tyler Nubin to a four-year rookie contract on Friday. His deal will not have a fifth-year option attached because he was not a first-round pick.

The NFL contract is worth $8.17 million ($2.04 million per year) and includes a $2.76 million signing bonus, according to Spotrac.

Nubin, 22, became the last of the Giants' six picks to agree to a deal. The Illinois native played 55 games and made 43 starts across five seasons (2019-23) at Minnesota.

As a Golden Gopher on defense, he recorded 207 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, 24 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

During his freshman season, Nubin played in 12 games and had six tackles. He finished his sophomore season with 41 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The 6-foot-1, 199-pound safety made 52 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions as a junior. He was then selected second-team All-Big Ten.

In his senior season in 2023, Nubin led the Gophers' secondary with five interceptions, breaking the program record for career interceptions with 13.

Furthermore, Nubin finished the season with 53 tackles, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble and recovery. At the end of the season, Nubin was named first-team All-Big Ten and first-team All-American before declaring for the NFL draft.

Nubin believes his time spent in the Golden Gophers' scheme has prepared him for the NFL

Nubin feels the scheme he played in at Minnesota prepared him for the NFL.

“I think the way the scheme was taught and the way the details were taught definitely prepared me for the NFL,” he said.

“The attention to detail and how everything was and how we ran our defense there definitely prepared me for what's coming. You know, being able to recognize formations and tips and tells from offenses, from the offensive perspective.

“I think that's definitely going to help me a lot.”

To this day, Nubin still cannot believe the Giants picked him.

“Unbelievable. Doesn't even feel like it's real,” he said when asked about his 47th overall selection. “Still trying to catch my breath. ... It's been awesome, man. I can't thank this organization enough for giving me this opportunity.

“I don't think anything can prepare you for what it feels like to get that call. [To] get an opportunity like this, play in a league where not a lot of people have been able so say they have been able to get to. So it's a dream come true. So I was not prepared for that at all.”

Since Xavier McKinney signed with the Green Bay Packers, Nubin could potentially earn a starting job in the Giants secondary for his rookie season. That is unless he underperforms or makes uncharacteristic mistakes during the preseason.
