Kevin Durant Confirmed What We All Thought About His Time With the Warriors

Kevin Durant's departure from the Golden State Warriors shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who follows the NBA. During his entire three-year run with the team, it always felt like it was a business partnership between him and the franchise.

Heading to the Brooklyn Nets was a surprising move, but it should make the next couple of seasons in New York very exciting. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Kevin Durant spoke about his time with the Warriors.

Today we will look at his comments and determine what to expect from Durant going forward.

Kevin Durant's comments about the Warriors

When speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Durant said:

“I came in there wanting to be part of a group, wanting to be part of a family, and definitely felt accepted. But I'll never be one of those guys. I didn't get drafted there.… Steph Curry, obviously drafted there. Andre Iguodala, won the first Finals, first championship. Klay Thompson, drafted there. Draymond Green, drafted there. And the rest of the guys kind of rehabilitated their careers there. So me? Shit, how you going to rehabilitate me? What you going to teach me? How can you alter anything in my basketball life? I got an MVP already. I got scoring titles.”

We can see why Durant would have that line of thinking. Coming in as an outsider, it's clear that the decision to join the Warriors was only about winning championships and becoming a better player.

The team never viewed Durant as one of them, even though they constantly preached that he was to the media. Of course, the torn Achilles in Game 5 of the NBA Finals didn't make the relationship any better, and Durant decided to leave the team via free agency.

Heading to Brooklyn

Is the culture the main reason Kevin Durant left the Warriors? During the 2018 NBA Finals championship parade, Warriors General Manager Bob Meyers put Durant on the spot. After previously mentioning that Durant could get any extension he wants, Meyers said that the media misconstrued his words.

When someone brought up the fact that he said Steph Curry was able to sign whatever deal he wants, Meyers said: “That's different..he's been here”. When we first heard this we knew that it was going to be a factor in Durant leaving, and he took his talents to Brooklyn, joining Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan in the Barclay's center.

Will Kevin Durant ever return to the Warriors?

After the end of the 2018-19 season, Bob Meyers stated that Durant was welcome back with the team anytime. Will there ever be a return to the franchise? We think after Kevin Durant's four-year deal in Brooklyn he could return to the Warriors. It will be towards the twilight of the careers of Curry, Thompson, and Green, but a reunion would put the league on notice again.

Even at the ages of 34+ those four guys can still make a deep playoff run in the Western Conference, especially with LeBron James probably retiring at the end of his current Lakers contract.

A reunion in OKC?

While the reunion with Kevin Durant and the Warriors is possible, we don't see the same thing happening with the Thunder. Durant was very upset with how he was treated upon his return to the city after leaving for the Warriors and still holds a major grudge against everyone associated with that franchise.

Thunder fans may welcome him back with open arms but we don't see it happening.
