Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa both made the 1998 MLB season one to remember. Both Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire have a high net worth too.

Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. Those two names will always be linked after the crazy 1998 home run race where they both broke the single-season home run record. PED allegations kind of made their accomplishments less meaningful, but the 1998 season was still one of the most exciting in MLB history. However, their achievements on the diamond still helped both McGwire and Sosa become very wealthy. So, now, with both of their careers being long over, does Mark McGwire or Sammy Sosa have a higher net worth?

Mark McGwire’s playing career

Mark McGwire made his debut for the Oakland Athletics in August 1986. After appearing in just 18 games at the plate that season, McGwire became a star in his second season.

McGwire won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 1987 as he hit .289, had 118 RBIs, and led the AL with 49 home runs. He also earned an All-Star selection that season, which was the first of six straight.

From then until the 1997 season when the Athletics traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals, McGwire starred in Oakland. He was a two-time Silver Slugger with the Athletics as he hit 363 home runs while he was there to go with 941 RBIs. McGwire also helped them win the World Series in 1989.

Then from the 1997 season through 2001, McGwire was a slugger for the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire hit 52 home runs during his last full year in Oakland, and then 58 in 1997 on the Athletics and Cardinals. However, 1998 was when he hit an incredible 70 home runs for the Cardinals. McGwire then followed that up with 65 home runs in 1999.

In just over four seasons with the Cardinals, McGwire hit 220 home runs and had 473 RBIs. For his career, he was a 12-time All-Star, a three-time Silver Slugger, and he hit 583 career home runs, which is 11th in MLB history.

Sammy Sosa’s playing career

Sammy Sosa had a much slower start to his career than McGwire did.

He appeared in 58 games at the plate in 1989 for the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox and only hit four home runs. Then in 1990, in 153 games for the White Sox, Sosa had 15 home runs and 70 RBIs. Sosa then only hit 10 home runs in 1991 for the White Sox, and eight for the Chicago Cubs in 1992.

However, in 1993 he became a star for the Cubs. Sosa hit 33 home runs that season to go with 93 RBIs. Then after hitting 25 homers in 1994, Sosa earned his first All-Star selection in 1995. He ultimately hit 36 home runs that season to go with 119 RBIs.

Sosa had 40 home runs in 1996 and 36 in 1997, but then 1998 was when he battled for the home run crown with McGwire as he had 66 to go with an NL-leading 158 RBIs. He ultimately won the NL MVP award that season and earned an All-Star selection, which was the first of five straight.

Sosa hit 60 or more home runs two of the next three seasons after 1998. He was also a Silver Slugger in five consecutive seasons from 1998 through 2002. Sosa last played in 2007.

For his career, Sosa was a seven-time All-Star, a six-time Silver Slugger, and he hit 609 home runs, which is ninth all-time.

With both of these guys having a ton of success during their careers, even despite the allegations that have surrounded them, you can probably guess that they are both very rich. Both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa have a massive net worth. However, only one has the larger one of the two.

Even though Sosa lost the home run battle in 1998, he has a higher net worth of the two former MLB stars. It is not by much, though. Celebrity Net Worth estimates that Sosa has a $70 million net worth. McGwire is just right behind him as Celebrity Net Worth estimates that McGwire has a $60 million net worth.

Just like their 1998 home run numbers, and even their career home run numbers, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa have net worths that are (almost) identical. Their MLB careers made them both extremely rich.
