The TGL is a brand-new planned Golf League created by TMRW Sports. With the backing of the PGA, the TGL is set to start their play next January. Last Thursday, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission tabled a vote on allowing sports betting on the TGL. Lawmakers need to review the legal requirements for sports wagering rules vs. eSports wagering.

BetMGM is one sportsbook that has submitted the request to allow wagering on the TGL. They’ve submitted a request in 11 total states including Massachusetts. The sportsbook’s request was received favorably by the state agency. However, there were issues with how TGL events will take place. It’s a combination of simulated golf by hitting balls into a screen. The golfer will play it live when the ball is 50 yards or closer to the hole.

Ultimately, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is hesitant because they need to decide if the TGL should be regular sports wagering or eSports wagering. Massachusetts hasn’t crafted any rules yet for eSports. With the TGL starting play in 2025, they need to devise regulations and decide where the TGL should fall in the sportsbook catalog.

What is the TGL and who’s part of the action?

The TGL is a six-team league with a match play format comprised of alternate shot formats and singles play. This all happens over 15 holes of simulated golf at the SoFi Center on the campus of Palm Beach State College. All six teams have four players and three compete in each TGL contest. To begin, golfers will take their tee shots by hitting a screen and playing on the simulator. Then, they will hit off natural surfaces into the screen again until the ball is at least 50 yards or less away from the green.

Golfers will then play on the “Green Zone”, a 3,800-square-foot area that sits on a 41-yard turntable. The “Green Zone” has nearly 600 actuators under the green surface designed to change the slope of the green on every hole. Truly incredible technology. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are two headlines of the TGL. Woods is part-owner of the Jupiter Links Golf Club which also has Max Homa, Tom Kim, and Kevin Kisner. Rory McIlroy is on the Boston Common Golf Team. They are owned by the Fenway Sports Group.

Along with Rory, their team has Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott. Tennis superstars Serena and Venus Williams are pat-owners of the Los Angeles Golf Club. Collin Morikawa and Justin Rose play for Los Angeles. The Bay Golf Club has Steph Curry and Klay Thompson as their part-owners. New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is also the owner of the New York Golf Club. Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele are the headlines for New York. Finally, there is the Atlanta Drive, which is owned by Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantaly are on Atlatna’s roster.
