Pistons Fire GM Troy Weaver After Going 74-244 Overall Since 2020

The Detroit Pistons fired general manager Troy Weaver on Friday, as team owner Tom Gores continues to rework the front office. Weaver, 56, was first hired as Detroit's general manager on June 18, 2020.

Under Weaver, the Pistons went 74-244 (.233) overall across four NBA seasons and extended a postseason drought to five seasons, dating back to 2019. Detroit has had the league's worst record the past two seasons and won just 23% of its games during his tenure.

Detroit hired Weaver after he was with the Oklahoma City Thunder for 12 seasons, including three-plus years as vice president of basketball operations.

During the 2008 offseason, Weaver pushed for drafting Russell Westbrook with the No. 4 overall pick in the draft. At the time, Westbrook wasn't projected as a first-round recruit.

Weaver was also promoted to vice president/assistant general manager for the Thunder in August 2010.

Although the Thunder advanced to the 2012 NBA Finals, they lost to LeBron James and the Miami Heat in five games.

However, Weaver could not replicate his OKC success in Detroit. One could even argue that Thunder G.M. Sam Presti was responsible for drafting Kevin Durant and James Harden.

The Pistons announced in April that they were seeking new leadership after the team finished 14-68 (.171) and set an NBA single-season record with 28 consecutive losses.

Detroit clinched the franchise's worst record in its 76-year history

More importantly, the Pistons clinched the franchise’s worst record in its 76-year history. They became the 13th team in NBA history to have a winless month (0-15 in November). The 1979-80 Pistons went 16-66 (.195). Detroit finished 17-65 (.207) in 2022-23 as well.

The Pistons have suffered 290 losses dating back to the 2019-20 season. The 2023-24 season marked the first time that Detroit had lost over 60 games in back-to-back seasons.

Additionally, this move comes a over a week after Detroit hired New Orleans Pelicans general manager Trajan Langdon as the franchise's new president of basketball operations.

Gores hired Langdon with the mindset that he'll help the franchise's future outlook after the team finished with a league-worst 14 victories and multiple consecutive years in the draft lottery.

Furthermore, Detroit has not had much luck in the draft lottery for the second straight season. The Pistons will have the No. 5 overall pick for the third straight year in the 2024 NBA Draft.

The Pistons are trying to rebuild around Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 pick in 2021.
