Packers WR Davante Adams Showing He's the Best in the Game

He may not be the biggest or the fastest, but Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams can run a route with the best of them. He's also got some of the best hands in the game. Combine that with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball and it's the perfect mix. Adams, in his seventh season with the Packers, is showing he's the best wideout in the game.

Davante Adams played his college football at Fresno State. He was a second-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2014 NFL draft. For the first few seasons with the Packers, Adams was the team's No. 3 receiver, playing behind the likes of Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Adams came into his own in 2016, even with Nelson and Cobb still on the roster. Adams was second to Nelson on the team in catches (75), receiving yards (997), and touchdowns (12). In 2017, Adams missed two games due to injury but made his first Pro Bowl. In 14 games, he finished with 885 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

Adams had his best season in 2018 when he made the second of his three straight Pro Bowls. He blossomed as the team's top receiving target, hauling in a career-high 1,386 yards and catching a career-high 13 touchdowns in 15 games. He missed four games in 2019 but returned to the Pro Bowl after another 997-yard season.

Adams confident, not cocky

There's nothing shy about Davante Adams. He'll tell it like it is. After torching the San Francisco 49ers for 10 catches, 173 yards, and a touchdown, he called himself the best receiver in the game. He was asked if he considered himself the best.

“I think that's fair to say,” Adams said, according to Packers.com. “I think that's not being conceited; that's just being confident. I think obviously what I've done and what I'm going to continue to do is going to prove that, to anybody who isn't on board with that. At the end of the day, I'll tell you yes, absolutely, I think I'm the best wide receiver in the game, but there's a lot of things that go into me being able to make that statement.”

That game against the 49ers wasn't even his best this season. Against the Houston Texans, Adams had 13 catches for 196 yards and two scores. A week later, in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, he had three touchdowns.

The numbers show Adams is the best

When it comes to being the best, the one thing that separates Davante Adams from many other receivers is the fact Adams has very little help. He won't call out any of his teammates, but he's been the main guy in Green Bay for a few years with no clear-cut No. 2 receiver. He's often double-teamed, yet still puts up the big numbers.

According to USA Today, Adams has the numbers to back him up after stating he's the best wide receiver in the game. At his current per-game averages, Adams would finish with 123 catches, 1,575 receiving yards and 18 touchdown catches despite missing two games. He's also first in the league in receptions per game (8.8), receiving yards per game (112.5), receiving touchdowns per game (1.33), and receiving first downs per game (6.0). Pro Football Focus has Adams with the highest grade among wideouts.

Adams' problem has been staying healthy. He hasn't played all 16 games since 2016. He's missed two-plus games this season with a hamstring issue. Despite missing those games, Adams still has the numbers to show he's the best receiver in the game.
