When your job performance is constantly, and publicly, being analyzed each and every day, self-belief is essential. At the same time, though, some players can take things a bit too far. Confidence and cockiness are two very different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington Redskins <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nfl-why-rookie-qb-dwayne-haskins-will-beat-out-2-veterans-to-start-in-2019\/\">signal-caller Dwayne Haskins<\/a> definitely made his opinion of himself known earlier this week, comparing himself to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tom-brady-age-starting-to-hurt-the-patriots\/\">Tom Brady,<\/a> Drew Brees, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/aaron-rodgers-already-like-matt-lafleur-more-than-mike-mccarthy\/\">Aaron Rodgers.<\/a> Was the young QB just talking a big game or does he have what it takes to be an NFL star?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dwayne Haskins' road to NCAA stardom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Season Highlights: Dwayne Haskins Declares for the 2019 NFL Draft | Ohio State | Big Ten Football\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eLDog1PeKK8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After starting his football career at the Bullis School outside of Washington D.C., Haskins committed to play collegiate ball at the University of Maryland. Head coach Randy Edsall was fired, though, prompting Haskins to make the switch to Ohio State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haskins spent his first season in Columbus as a redshirt, later serving as J.T Barrett's backup. He would make eight appearances in his first full season, before taking over the starting role for the 2018 campaign. The Buckeyes never looked back, as Haskins threw for 50 touchdowns en route to a Big 10 title and a Rose Bowl win. On the back of that performance, the Washington Redskins picked Haskins 15th overall in the 2019 NFL draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjusting to the NFL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his draft status, Haskins wasn't promised an immediate starting role. In fact, he started the season behind Case Keenum on the depth chart. Even when Washington got off to a slow start, head coach Jay Gruden wasn't ready to make an immediate switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Haskins was frequently asked about his role on the team. With rookies like Daniel Jones and Gardner Minshew making headlines, reporters expected the young quarterback to demand a chance to play. I want to be like Tom Brady and Drew Brees and that's something that doesn't happen overnight,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/blog\/washington-redskins\/post\/_\/id\/39060\/redskins-backup-dwayne-haskins-unfazed-patiently-awaits-his-chance\">he told reporters.<\/a> Tom didn't play at first; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/8439\/aaron-rodgers\">Aaron Rodgers<\/a> didn't play at first.&#8221; But he didn't have to wait much longer though; a few days later, Haskins got his shot to play against the New York Giants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making his NFL debut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For the first time in his career, a Dwayne Haskins pass finds the end zone.<br><br>(via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NFL<\/a>)<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zr86DuvYe9\">pic.twitter.com\/zr86DuvYe9<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CBS Sports HQ (@CBSSportsHQ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSSportsHQ\/status\/1178386672301547521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 29, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During a disappointing afternoon against the New York Giants, the Redskins decided to give Haskins his debut. Unsurprisingly, he didn't look like Brady, Brees, or Rodgers when he finally took the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rookie quarterback only completed nine passed for 107 yards; he threw three interceptions and was sacked twice. He didn't appear to read the game particularly well and simply looked like a rookie thrown into the deep end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of that means he's automatically a draft bust, however. As Haskins himself pointed out, plenty of quarterbacks have needed time to develop. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-old-is-drew-brees-and-how-much-is-he-making-as-the-saints-quarterback-in-2018\/\">Drew Brees<\/a> has been around for a long time, but he took some time to truly develop into a star; in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers famously sat behind Brett Farve learning the ropes before taking an NFL snap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haskins clearly has talent, but may need some time to bring it out.
