Ron Rivera has already <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/1-change-ron-rivera-already-made-to-the-washington-redskins-locker-room\/\">shaken up the Washington Redskins locker room<\/a>, Pat Shurmur <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/firing-pat-shurmur-and-keeping-dave-gettleman-wont-solve-the-new-york-giants-problems\/\">lost his job with the New York Giants<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/jerry-jones-made-his-bed-with-jason-garrett-now-he-has-to-lie-in-it\/\">Jerry Jones finally dropped the ax<\/a> on Jason Garrett. Every firing, however, needs a corresponding hiring; according to Brett Favre, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-mike-mccarthy-really-replace-jason-garrett-as-cowboys-coach\/\">Mike McCarthy will do a great job<\/a> anywhere he lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/brett-favres-deadly-addiction-almost-cost-him-his-nfl-career\/\">the veteran gunslinger<\/a>, McCarthy still has what it takes to lead an NFL organization. One specific reality could make him an attractive candidate for several clubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mike McCarthy's coaching career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mike McCarthy reflects on his time with Packers, NFL future\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e6fIKi2mUq4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While Mike McCarthy eventually rose to football's highest heights, he started out in much more humble circumstances. He began coaching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goforthaysstate.com\/s\/947\/index.aspx?pgid=1505\">at Fort Hays State<\/a>, where he served as a graduate assistant before moving on to the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a few years in the Steel City, McCarthy made the jump to the professional ranks. <a href=\"https:\/\/pro-football-history.com\/coach\/254\/mike-mccarthy-bio\">He joined the Kansas City Chiefs organization<\/a>, starting as an offensive quality control assistant and eventually working his way up to quarterbacks coach. McCarthy then spent the 1999 season as the Green Bay Packers' quarterback's coach, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/brett-favre-a-gunslinger-revealed\/\">working with a young Brett Favre<\/a>, before running the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers offenses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2006, McCarthy returned to Green Bay, this time as the head coach. While success didn't come easily, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/26415173\/inside-mike-mccarthy-split-packers-next-him\">the club's fortunes started turning<\/a>. McCarthy would lift the Lombardi Trophy at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign and remained in Wisconsin until Week 13 of 2018. One situation, though, would be ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think he\u2019ll do a great job,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/01\/03\/brett-favre-how-mike-mccarthy-would-improve-daniel-jones\/\"> the veteran quarterback explained<\/a> on SiriusXM NFL Radio. \u201cI had him in 1999, and that was basically the middle of my career, and after that year he was gone, but then he came back obviously as the head coach. And really a bright mind. Good for a quarterback. I think any young quarterback would like him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd he\u2019s very understandable, much like Brian Daboll at Buffalo and Darrell Bevell [ of the Detriot Lions], guys who are coaching right now, relate to the guys very well,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/01\/03\/brett-favre-how-mike-mccarthy-would-improve-daniel-jones\/\">Favre continued<\/a>. &#8220;And I think that\u2019s important, on top of his X\u2019s-and-O\u2019s mentality. Obviously, he\u2019s had Aaron Rodgers, and that certainly helps. But I do think he brings a level of toughness but also a confidence that as a player, as a quarterback for him, you feel confident in the plays that he calls, that he\u2019s going to call plays that cater more to your ability rather than maybe a previous guy he had. So I think he\u2019s a simple but yet confidence-building and technique-driven coach. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2018\/dec\/03\/why-the-green-bay-packers-fired-mike-mccarthy\">conservative playcalling<\/a> led to conflicts with Aaron Rodgers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/2019\/12\/panthers-mike-mccarthy\">the coach often appeared lost<\/a> in late-game situations. McCarthy claims to have spent his time away from the game, <a href=\"https:\/\/923thefan.radio.com\/articles\/trotter-mike-mccarthy-has-new-approach-embraced-analytics\">becoming more of a modern head coach<\/a>, but the proof of that will be in the pudding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decision-making aside, though, we do know that McCarthy is a talented offensive coach with a knack for working with quarterbacks. That opens up a few job possibilities, depending on the type of project he wants to take on. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/is-troy-aikman-right-about-the-cowboys-needing-to-pay-dak-prescott\/\">Dak Prescott needs less guidance<\/a> than some of the other candidates, but has plenty of talent; the price of taking over the Cowboys offense, though, is dealing with Jerry Jones. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/is-baker-mayfield-good-or-is-he-the-next-tim-tebow\/\">Baker Mayfield has shown potential star power<\/a> in Cleveland, but the Browns can't seem to get out of their own way. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/maybe-the-new-york-giants-have-their-guy-in-daniel-jones-after-all\/\">Daniel Jones of the New York Giants<\/a> is also an exciting prospect to team up with, but <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/01\/04\/giants-getting-their-matt-rhule-interview-as-challenger-emerges\/\">the club may prefer Matt Rhule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether he lands with the Cowboys, Browns, or Giants, Mike McCarthy will have plenty of toys on offense.
