Years before the fateful crash, he started traveling by helicopter for one specific reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kobe Bryant's tragic, untimely passing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stephen A. The former Los Angeles Lakers guard and eight others tragically <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/los-angeles-lakers-legend-kobe-bryant-reportedly-dies-in-a-tragic-helicopter-crash\/\">died in a helicopter crash.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2020\/01\/26\/kobe-bryant-killed-dead-helicopter-crash-in-calabasas\/\">As initially reported by TMZ<\/a>, the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter crashed into a hillside on a foggy, Southern California morning. While the accident is still under investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/28572984\/helicopter-carrying-kobe-bryant-made-climbing-turn-rapid-dive\">a source told ESPN<\/a> that the pilot had been trying to climb above the fog and clouds; shortly after that ascent, the vehicle descended and crashed into a hillside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday,\u00a0local authorities confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrangDoCBS3\/status\/1221751897599758336\">the passengers\u2019 identities<\/a>; all nine people tragically died in the crash. According to ESPN\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wojespn\/status\/1221537476893925376\">Adrian Wojnarowski<\/a>, the vehicle was apparently on its way to a travel basketball game at the time of the accident. He started traveling by helicopter in an effort to spend as much time with his family as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Traffic started getting really, really bad,&#8221; Bryant explained on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCGm2DnTZF-lecohXwiXy2Pw\">The Corp With A-Rod and Big Cat<\/a>.<\/em> &#8220;I was sitting in traffic, and I ended up missing the school play because I was sitting in traffic. These things just kept mounting, and I had to figure out a way where I could still train and focus on the craft, but still not compromise family time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So that's when I looked into helicopters to be able to get down and back in 15 minutes,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And that's when it started. So my routine was always the same: weights early in the morning, kids to school, fly down, practice like crazy, do my extra work, media, everything that I needed to do, fly back, get in the carpool line, pick the kids up. My wife was like, &#8216;listen, I can pick them up,' and I'm like &#8216;no, no, no, I want to do that.' His decision to travel by helicopter, however, reminds us that <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kobe-bryant-already-told-us-how-we-should-remember-him\/\">he was a real person, not a comic book hero.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kobe Bryant wasn't a one-dimensional person who solely existed on the basketball court. He was an incredible athlete; he was a husband and a father. He built himself into an NBA icon, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/m7qbqx\/kobe-bryant-was-no-more-complicated-than-anyone-else\">credibly accused of sexual assault<\/a>. Those realities shouldn't get lost in the shuffle and sandblasted by our visceral emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of us never met Bryant, we feel like we knew him as an athlete.
