{"id":1100483,"date":"2020-02-12T06:45:30","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T11:45:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1100483"},"modified":"2020-02-12T06:45:30","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T11:45:30","slug":"will-jeff-van-gundy-leave-tv-to-coach-the-new-york-knicks-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/will-jeff-van-gundy-leave-tv-to-coach-the-new-york-knicks-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Jeff Van Gundy leave TV to coach the New York Knicks again?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/can-1-bold-move-help-make-the-new-york-knicks-relevant-again\/\">New York Knicks<\/a> cannot stand prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well on their way to a seventh straight season missing the NBA playoffs, team owner <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/did-knicks-owner-james-dolan-make-the-right-call-hiring-leon-rose\/\">James Dolan<\/a> made a promising move last week in luring well-connected player agent Leon Rose to become team president and run basketball operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Mike Miller in charge of the bench after the previous regime\nfired coach David Fizdale in December, it seems logical that Rose will look to\nhire a coach from the sport\u2019s A-list. Though only a dysfunctional team would create\nunnecessary drama by announcing that it will make a coaching change before the\nstart of next season, a Knicks spokesman with no authority to do so went ahead\nand spilled the beans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All that\u2019s left is to figure out who will get the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Knicks are backtracking after a blunder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"That Time John Wooden Gave Jeff Van Gundy a Knicks&#039; Game Plan | The Rich Eisen Show | 10\/21\/19\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T-0QrZKGYcA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Former music industry executive Steve Stoute, hired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/is-adam-silver-secretly-trying-help-save-the-new-york-knicks\/\">New York Knicks<\/a> as their brand consultant, went on ESPN\u2019s First Take and said the decision to fire team president Steve Mills two days before the NBA trade deadline meant the Knicks would also be <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/02\/10\/knicks-to-put-jeff-van-gundy-tom-thibodeau-on-coaching-wish-list\/\ufeff\">making a coaching change<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His words forced the club to issue a statement saying Stoute,\n&#8220;does not speak on behalf of the New York Knicks personnel and basketball\noperations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s as far as the statement went. There was no denial that a\ndecision had been made on Miller. There was no form of an acknowledgment that\nhis 13-19 record in the interim role is commendable for a team lacking\nplayoff-quality talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time Stoute spoke to ESPN, the New York Post was already reporting that ex-Knicks head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/lakers-trade-lebron-james\/\">Jeff Van Gundy<\/a> and former Knicks assistant <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/why-the-chicago-bulls-will-regret-firing-tom-thibodeau\/\">Tom Thibodeau<\/a> are expected to make president Leon Rose\u2019s list of candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rose won\u2019t officially start with the Knicks until he\nfinishes tying up loose ends as Creative Artists Agency, where Thibodeau is a\nclient. Though the two have a relationship, Van Gundy has a bigger name in New\nYork and national basketball circles. And the name of University of Kentucky\ncoach John Calipari will continue to pop up throughout the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jeff Van Gundy can coach, but will he?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The only time Tracy McGrady made Jeff Van Gundy &#039;extremely angry&#039; | The Jump\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rmI0BOv-ocI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If Leon Rose wants him, Jeff Van Gundy\u2019s return to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-new-york-knicks-have-a-secret-agent-in-world-wide-wes\/\">New York Knicks<\/a> would still hinge on actual interest by Van Gundy and approval by owner James Dolan. Neither is a slam dunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Gundy, a Pat Riley prot\u00e9g\u00e9, took over as Knicks\ncoach from Don Nelson in March 1996 and had some success in the four full\nseasons the followed. He resigned unexpectedly a quarter of the way into the\n2001-02 season, then resurfaced two seasons later for a four-year run with the Houston\nRockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Gundy\u2019s coaching experience since has consisted primarily\nof dabbling with USA Basketball in recent years. If Knicks owner Jim Dolan has\nill feelings toward him because of the surprise resignation two decades ago,\nthen Van Gundy\u2019s 248-172 record with the Knicks won\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if Dolan approves hiring Van Gundy, who led the Knicks to their last NBA Finals appearance in 1999, the question becomes whether the return to an 82-game grind\nappeals to one of the most popular TV analysts in pro sports. His banter with\nfellow announcers Mike Breen and Mark Johnson, often on topics totally\nunrelated to basketball, turns even blowout games into interesting viewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TV job is a lighter workload for Van Gundy, 58,\nthough the pay from the Knicks would be much better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who else can the New York Knicks hire as their coach?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"That Time Jeff Van Gundy Chickened Out on Asking Jodie Foster for a Date | The Rich Eisen Show\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4tfU5Qj-h08?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Assuming that Mike Miller really will be let go, the\nKnicks will not be hurting for candidates to replace him for the 2020-21\nseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom Thibodeau, a Knicks assistant under Jeff Van\nGundy, was 352-246 during stints with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota\nTimberwolves. Like Van Gundy, he does his best work shaping the defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/is-former-warriors-coach-mark-jackson-really-blackballed-in-the-nba\/\">Mark Jackson<\/a> had two stints as a Knicks player and coached the Golden State Warriors for three seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/john-caliparis-all-time-team-who-would-be-the-starters\/\">John Calipari<\/a>. No matter how many times the Kentucky Wildcats coach says he is happy in college basketball and is not interested in the Knicks, his name will continue to be linked to the Knicks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeff Van Gundy has already coached the New York Knicks once.
