His teams have won at least 22 games in every season since an 18-13 record in 1996-96. Krzyzewski\u2019s record at Duke entering the 2019-20 season is 1,059-285.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before accepting the job at Duke, Krzyzewski served as the head coach at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, for five years with a 73-59 record. His connection to West Point began as a student there; Krzyzewski was the Army team\u2019s captain as a senior in 1968-69 under coach <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/most-hated-coaches\/\">Bobby Knight<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krzyzewski fulfilled his five-year military obligation after\ngraduating and coached service teams for three years in that time. After being\ndischarged, he joined Knight\u2019s staff at Indiana as an assistant coach in 1974\nand left after the season to accept the head coaching job at his alma mater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Duke has been Mike Krzyzewski\u2019s home since the 1980-81 season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Duke&#039;s coach K yells &quot;shut up&quot; at student section | Inside College Basketball\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tAhwiNQOxA0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Krzyzewski was appointed as head coach at Duke in March 1980 and\nhas guided the team to the NCAA Division I Tournament in 35 of the past 36\nseasons. His Duke teams have won 15 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and\nplayed in the NCAA Final Four a dozen times. Duke won the championship in 1991,\n1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Nov. 15, 2011, the man known throughout the sports as \u201cCoach K\u201d\nregistered his 903<sup>rd<\/sup> career victory to pass mentor Bobby Knight\u2019s record\nfor Division I coaches. Two years later he became the first Division I men\u2019s\ncoach to win 1,000 games with one school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krzyzewski reached another milestone with the Blue Devils on March 17, 2018, with his 1,099<sup>th<\/sup> victory to pass Tennessee women\u2019s coach <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/7-teams-with-the-most-college-basketball-championships\/\">Pat Summitt<\/a> for the most wins by a Division I coach, men or women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winning his 1,123<sup>rd<\/sup> game in February 2019 made\nKrzyzewski the winningest NCAA coach ever at any level. He began the 2019-20\nseason with 1,132 victories, far ahead of Syracuse University\u2019s Jim Boeheim,\nsecond at 946 wins. Bobby Knight was still third at 902 wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krzyzewski, an inductee in the Naismith Memorial Basketball <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/8-nba-players-that-should-be-enshrined-in-the-basketball-hall-of-fame\/\">Hall of Fame<\/a>, has also worked his through the ranks of USA Basketball. He was an assistant coach on the Olympic teams that captured gold medals in 1984 and 1992. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was appointed head coach of the national team in 2005 and steered the United States to gold medals in Beijing in 2008 (captained by Kobe Bryant), London in 2012, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/rio-olympics-reasons-coach-team-usa\/\">Rio de Janeiro<\/a> in 2016. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/carmelo-anthony-was-ready-to-retire-before-signing-with-the-portland-trail-blazers\/\">Carmelo Anthony<\/a> played on all three of those teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mike Krzyzewski\u2019s coaching tree is impressive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"These Are Coach K&#039;s\u00a0Most Important Leadership Lessons\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xw2cqR3uZ3c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Coach K has frequently been linked to NBA head coaching jobs since 1990 when the Boston Celtics offered him their job. The most noteworthy offer came in 2004 when he interviewed with the Los Angeles Lakers following Phil Jackson\u2019s resignation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of his former players and assistant coaches have gone on to become Division I head coaches.
