{"id":1105602,"date":"2020-02-25T18:54:47","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T23:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1105602"},"modified":"2020-02-26T08:29:03","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T13:29:03","slug":"what-stunning-change-are-olympic-officials-discussing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/what-stunning-change-are-olympic-officials-discussing\/","title":{"rendered":"What Stunning Change Are Olympic Officials Discussing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The coronavirus outbreak has left organizers of one of the major international sports events more likely to cancel the 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/organizers-have-huge-concerns-about-heat-at-2020-tokyo-olympics\/\">Tokyo<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/here-are-the-newest-sports-at-the-2020-summer-olympics\/\">Olympics<\/a> than postpone them, citing the complications caused by trying to push competition back by months or even a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the deadline for deciding the fate of the Olympics?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tokyo Olympics face questions over coronavirus\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KtQbhcsl9Fw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2020\nOlympics are scheduled for July 24-Aug. 9. Countries have already begun the\nselection process in some sports that will result in approximately 11,000\nathletes descending upon Tokyo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dick Pound, a senior member of the International Olympic Committee, said officials could wait until May to decide whether to proceed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-the-wgc-mexico-finish-hurt-tiger-woods-chances-of-playing-in-the-olympics\/\">Olympics<\/a> but added that the organizing committee probably needs three months of lead time. He cited the need to get the Olympic Village secured, furnished, and stocked with food and supplies if the IOC abides by the current schedule. Also, broadcasters need time to build studios and bring in equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You could certainly go to two months out if you had to,&#8221; Pound told <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/58043910be7bdc6818344bdee2096bc2\">The Associated Press<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Postponing\nthe quadrennial competition\nis not a simple alternative because of uncertainty about how long it\nwill take to contain the coronavirus outbreak. The\nviral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 80,000 people across\nthe world and killed over 2,700 people, including four in Japan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the IOC determines the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-2-factors-that-will-decide-lebron-james-status-for-the-2020-olympics\/\">Olympics<\/a> cannot be held as scheduled in Tokyo, \u201cyou\u2019re probably looking at a cancellation,\u201d Pound said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trying to push the Tokyo Games back to the fall would limit the participation of some athletes in professional leagues for sports including soccer and basketball. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/10-athletes-have-earned-lebron-james-highest-praise\/\">LeBron James<\/a>, Michael Westbrook, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/whats-missing-from-jayson-tatums-new-tattoo\/\">Jayson Tatum<\/a>, Kawhi Leonard, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/stephen-curry-reveals-his-target-date-to-return-to-the-golden-state-warriors-lineup\/\">Stephen Curry<\/a> are among the NBA stars under consideration to represent the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Television networks would also be affected. NBC, which paid $1.45 billion for the U.S. rights, has NFL and college football games on its schedule. The network might be forced to choose between showing <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bettors-were-stunned-after-patrick-mahomes-did-this\/\">Patrick Mahomes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/lamar-jackson-is-already-getting-pro-hall-of-fame-honors\/\">Lamar Jackson<\/a> or popular Olympic sports such as <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-simone-biles-compete-in-the-2020-olympics\/\">gymnastics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-swimmer-michael-phelps-compete-in-2020-olympics\/\">swimming<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the potential options?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tokyo governor criticizes suggestion that London could host 2020 Olympics\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9hOuPLrWCp0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Postponing the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-softball-and-baseball-be-at-the-2020-olympics\/\">Olympics<\/a> by a full year potentially puts the IOC head-to-head with qualifying for soccer\u2019s 2022 World Cup and leaves Tokyo with billions of dollars in new facilities and no revenue to pay the financing in the interim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving\nthe entire competition to another city on short notice is a logistical\nnightmare and does not guarantee that the coronavirus\noutbreak wouldn\u2019t still be a complication.
