With the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/coronavirus-could-have-devastating-financial-effects-on-us-soccer\/\">coronavirus (COVID-19) wiping out<\/a> nearly every professional and college sport in its way, it\u2019s hard not to feel for the athletes, especially college seniors who have lost out at the chance of playing for a national title.\u00a0<br>Geno Auriemma knows a little bit about championships as his UConn women\u2019s basketball program has collected 11 national titles. With the recent news that the NCAA tournaments have been canceled, Auriemma had an interesting idea that would give college seniors another crack at playing for a championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geno Auriemma's plan for college seniors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Geno Auriemma discusses coronavirus&#039; impact on college basketball\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RXsuXi5-98c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the coronavirus wiped out virtually the entire sports world this week, UConn\u2019s shot of title No. 12 went out the window. The Huskies were right where they normally are, sitting pretty with a 28-3 record and hungry for another run at a championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing on <em>SportsCenter,<\/em> \u00a0Auriemma stressed how bad he felt for the players, especially seniors, and said he would love to see the NCAA grant seniors in both winter and spring sports <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2880670-geno-auriemma-ncaa-should-grant-extra-eligibility-after-canceling-tournaments\">another year of eligibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Auriemma knows it\u2019s a longshot, but he said the NCAA (and all of sports) is going through something that\u2019s never happened before and that drastic measures should be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <br>\u201cMy feeling is this: It\u2019s an unprecedented event so you have to take unprecedented measures.&#8221; <\/p><cite>Geno Auriemma<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Auriemma's toughest coaching season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Geno Auriemma Speaks at A Celebration of Life for Kobe and Gianna Bryant\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zf4VNKtTG1I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2019-20 season has been a tough one for Geno Auriemma. Although the Huskies finished with a 28-3 mark, it\u2019s wasn\u2019t a typical UConn dominant season.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UConn saw its 98-game home winning streak come to an end in early January at the hands of Baylor. He missed a game due to surgery, an assistant coach left for personal reasons, and the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/was-kobe-bryant-the-most-competitive-professional-athlete-of-all-time\/\">Kobe Bryant<\/a> and his daughter Gianna, who dreamed of playing basketball at UConn, really hit Auriemma hard.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The always-talkative Auriemma was asked to speak at the memorial service for Bryant, but the UConn coach said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/sports\/uconn-womens-basketball\/hc-sp-uconn-women-geno-auriemma-column-20200304-3pwqphleqnhuvkg2ntlz37exnq-story.html\">he didn\u2019t think he would be able to.<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt's one of the few times I actually said I don't know if I can handle this,\u201d Auriemma said Monday. \u201cI didn't know if I could do what Vanessa [Bryant, Kobe\u2019s widow] wanted me to do. I said, \u2018I don't know if I can do it.\u2019 And then when she spoke and then [Diana Taurasi] and then Sabrina [Ionescu], I started thinking, \u2018OK, what's really important here?\u2019 And it was easier to deliver what I wanted to say. Prior to him jumping on board in 1985, the UConn women\u2019s program had just <a href=\"https:\/\/uconnhuskies.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/coaches\/geno-auriemma\/599\">one winning season in its history.<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 65-year-old Auriemma has compiled 1,090 career victories and had a career 532-64 mark in conference play.
