Whether you were a fan of Magic and Kareem or <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/shaquille-oneal-vows-to-change-his-life-after-kobe-bryants-sudden-death\/\">Shaq and Kobe<\/a>, everyone knows <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nba-why-are-the-lakers-called-the-lakers\/\">the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>; similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/why-michael-jordans-1998-championship-is-still-the-most-watched-game-in-nba-history\/\">Michael Jordan<\/a> placed the Chicago Bulls on the map. When it comes to historic success, however, it's hard to compete with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-many-times-have-the-lakers-and-celtics-played-each-other\/\">the Boston Celtics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days,<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-revealed-the-best-celtics-team-he-ever-played-on\/\"> the Boston Celtics<\/a> are simply part of the NBA furniture. The history of their name, however, might not be as straightforward as you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It all started with the Original Celtics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"1932 Original Celtics\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pkiHjjbK3io?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ask a modern basketball fan about the Celtics, they'd assume you're talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-5-greatest-boston-celtics-in-nba-history-2\/\">the team in Boston<\/a>. The name, however, was actually popularized by an older club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1911, New York City's first recreational basketball league launched. Most teams were reflective of their home neighborhood; a group of Irish immigrants from Chelsea, unsurprisingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=obWt-GingHwC&amp;printsec=frontcover#v=snippet&amp;q=west%20side&amp;f=false\">took the name of the Celtics<\/a>. The team found some local success but dissolved when the United States entered World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the war, though, Jim and Thomas Furey had an idea. They rebranded the team as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celticshub.com\/2018\/08\/09\/new-york-celtics\/\">the Original Celtics<\/a> and moved into the professional circuit; before long, the club was dominating the New York City basketball scene. Eventually, they started barnstorming and reportedly won 90% of their games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Original Celtics <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090831071803\/http:\/\/www.hoophall.com\/hall-of-famers\/tag\/original-celtics\">literally redefined the game<\/a>\u2014they're credited with pioneering low post play, zone defense, and switching within man-to-man defense\u2014their time at the top came to an end. Every team, however, needs a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iepIS4whpmQC&amp;pg=PA20&amp;lpg=PA20&amp;dq=No+team+with+an+Irish+name+has+ever+won+a+damned+thing+in+Boston&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=2i35d4ImUO&amp;sig=ACfU3U3JlC1j1cR2eSlY1Qnidz9vqIa7lA&amp;hl=en&amp;ppis=_c&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwif5Ma5xqHoAhVuT98KHWwlAvEQ6AEwDXoECBIQAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=No%20team%20with%20an%20Irish%20name%20has%20ever%20won%20a%20damned%20thing%20in%20Boston&amp;f=false\">While options included<\/a> the Whirlwinds, the Olympians, and the Unicorns, owner Walter Brown eventually settled on the Celtics. While some tried to warn him that similar ideas, like <a href=\"http:\/\/fenwayparkdiaries.com\/football\/boston%20shamrocks.htm\">the Boston Shamrocks<\/a> football team, had failed, Brown persisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The name has a great basketball tradition from the old Original Celtics in New York,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/celtics\/history\/Name.html\">he said<\/a>. &#8220;And, Boston is full of Irishmen. Success, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/teams\/BOS\/\">didn't come easily<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team's fortunes changed, however, when Red Auerbach took over as coach. In a matter of years, he had the Celtics winning titles; the team, of course, would grow into a dynasty. Today, the Celtics are <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.nba.com\/news\/nba-finals-2019-most-championships-won-by-nba-franchise-boston-celtics-los-angeles-lakers\/15t9wz5dcll3h1nr17bf7bd96w\">the NBA's winningest franchise<\/a> with 17 titles and boast legends like Bill Russell, Bob Cousey, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ranking-the-5-players-taken-ahead-of-larry-bird-in-the-1978-nba-draft\/\">Larry Bird<\/a> among their alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to that success, the Celtics are synonymous with both the NBA and Boston sports. The franchise, however, got a nice assist from the Original Celtics.
