While His Airness might not have been <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-or-lebron-james-who-demands-more-from-teammates\/\">the easiest man<\/a> to play with, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-made-michael-jordan-so-different-from-every-other-nba-player\/\">his ruthlessness paid off<\/a>; the Chicago Bulls turned into a powerhouse, and MJ revolutionized the game of basketball. His time <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-isnt-the-only-nba-star-to-play-pro-baseball\/\">playing professional baseball<\/a>, however, was a different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the midst of his NBA career, Michael Jordan hung up his sneakers and decided to swap sports. While his brief baseball career may live on in sporting lore, was he any good at America's pastime?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Michael Jordan's initial retirement from basketball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Suspicious Retirement Of Michael Jordan\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OyeCf8Vp38U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By the fall of 1993, Michael Jordan had already established himself as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jordami01.html\">basketball's dominant star<\/a>. He had won three straight NBA Championships and was named the NBA Finals MVP each time; he had also taken home three league MVP awards and earned two Olympic gold medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That reality, combined with his father's brutal murder, inspired Jordan to make a change. In October 1993, His Airness, seemingly out of nowhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/remembering-michael-jordans-ill-fated-1st-retirement-26-years-ago\/\">retired from professional basketball.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always stressed to people that when I lose the sense of motivation, it\u2019s time for me to move on,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1993-10-07-mn-43272-story.html\">Jordan explained at the time<\/a>. &#8220;I\u2019ve reached the pinnacle and I\u2019ve achieved a lot in a short period. I don\u2019t have anything else to prove.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where he did have something to prove, though, was on the baseball diamond. In 1994, he signed a contract with the Chicago White Sox, setting out to fulfill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsonearth.com\/article\/74071860\/chicago-bulls-michael-jordan-20th-anniversary-retirement-baseball-white-sox\">a promise to his late father<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plying his trade on the baseball diamond<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Michael Jordan plays right field for the White Sox\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ezVvXFgjGgg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring of 1994, Michael Jordan's professional baseball career officially begun. He reported to spring training with the Chicago White Sox; at the end of camp, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/cut4\/24-years-ago-michael-jordan-signed-with-the-white-sox-c266022750\">assigned to the Birmingham Barrons<\/a>, the organization's AA affiliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being thrown into the deep end, Jordan eventually found his feet and managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/michael-jordan-s-underrated-minor-league-baseball-career\">go on a 13-game hitting streak<\/a>. Before long, though, everything would change. As with most &#8216;young' hitters, MJ started seeing a steady diet of offspeed pitches and balls outside of the strike zone; he struggled to adjust and started striking out with increasing regularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the field, he didn't do much better. According to\u00a0Bob Herold, who worked with Jordan in the Arizona Fall League, the NBA star was still catching fly balls like a little leaguer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The first time I saw him fielding, he looked like a 5-year-old going for fly balls, catching everything on the run with two hands,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/sports\/2017\/03\/the-oral-history-of-michael-jordan-baseball-career\">Herold recalled.<\/a> &#8220;I told him, &#8216;A big man like you has to catch those on the side, with one hand.' And he said, &#8216;That\u2019s how my dad taught me, catching everything with two hands. That\u2019s how you play the game right.' Sure, if you\u2019re standing still. And I\u2019m wondering,\u00a0&#8216;I\u2019m really the first guy to tell this guy how to catch the ball right?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Was Michael Jordan any good at baseball?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XTMdZmR1fPs\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When everything was said and done, Michael Jordan's professional baseball career only lasted for the 1994 campaign. With Major League players on strike, he decided it was time to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-returns-to-nba-25-years-later\/\">return to the hardwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milb.com\/player\/index.jsp?sid=milb&amp;player_id=470052#\/career\/R\/hitting\/1994\/ALL\">his one season in AA<\/a>, Jordan appeared in 127 games. He recorded 88 hits in 436 at-bats, which works out to a .202 batting average; he also hit three home runs and stole 30 bases while striking out 114 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It goes without saying that those aren't dominant numbers, but they're still impressive in their own way. Some players spend their entire careers trying to make it past AA ball; Jordan admittedly struggled, but he did so without a wealth of experience. Based on what we know about <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordans-trainer-explains-the-secret-behind-mjs-greatness\/\">MJ's incredible willpower<\/a>, it's a safe bet that he would have improved over time.
