{"id":1121803,"date":"2020-03-21T11:50:52","date_gmt":"2020-03-21T15:50:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1121803"},"modified":"2020-03-23T10:49:08","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T14:49:08","slug":"the-pga-commissioner-stands-to-lose-millions-and-is-ok-with-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/the-pga-commissioner-stands-to-lose-millions-and-is-ok-with-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The PGA Tour Commissioner Stands to Lose Millions and is OK With It"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With men\u2019s golf one of the sports completely shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-pga-championship-and-4-tour-events-are-the-latest-victims-of-the-coronavirus\/\">PGA Tour<\/a> commissioner Jay Monahan has stopped taking a salary and confirmed that several top executives are taking pay cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/2020\/03\/20\/pga-tour-commissioner-gives-up-salary-coronavirus-crisis\/\">Golfweek reported<\/a> that the top executives volunteered to take 25% cuts and that all other employees have had their salaries frozen at 2019 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PGA Tour leader Jay Monahan takes a big personal hit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on cancelling The Players Championship | Get Up\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uTEuQm_LHGI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jay Monahan, who became\ncommissioner of the PGA Tour for the 2017 season, did not indicate when he\nwould resume taking a salary. He disclosed his decision to the Players Advisory\nCouncil on Tuesday. According to the PGA Tour\u2019s tax filings, he was paid $3.9\nmillion in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monahan, 48, played on\nthe golf team at Division III Trinity College in Connecticut and earned a\nmaster\u2019s degree in sports management from UMass in 1995. While working for IMG\nWorldwide, he became involved in the operation of the Deutsche Bank\nChampionship at TPC Boston, working his way up to tournament director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monahan joined the PGA Tour office in 2008 as executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-17th-hole-at-the-players-why-the-short-par-3-is-one-of-the-most-intimidating-holes-on-tour\/\">The Players Championship<\/a> and continued moving up the ranks. He was the PGA Tour\u2019s chief operating officer when commissioner Tim Finchem announced his retirement in late 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The PGA Tour will remain dark through at least late May<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan on Tiger Woods &amp; media deal with ESPN | Get Up\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h4f0MMiU7CM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Having held out as one of\nthe last major sports in the country to try playing on as the coronavirus\ncrisis unfolded, the PGA Tour suspended play March 13 after one round of The\nPlayers Championship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioner Jay Monahan\nannounced at that time that four more tournaments were being canceled: the\nValspar Championship, WGC-Dell Match Play Championship, Punta Cana Championship,\nand Valero Texas Open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the pandemic still not contained and tightened public safety measures being enforced throughout the country, the RBC Heritage, Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Wells Fargo Championship, and AT&amp;T Byron Nelson were canceled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/should-the-pga-be-worried-about-a-rival-golf-tour\/\">PGA Tour<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also canceled events on its five other tours, including the PGA Tour Champions. In all, 17 events have been canceled and 20 postponed. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/could-the-masters-be-moving-to-october\/\">The Masters<\/a> and PGA Championship, which are not conducted by the PGA Tour, are among the other events postponed until at least the end of May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The focus has been on athletes\u2019 pay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PGA Tour commissioner on media rights, how tour will handle coronavirus\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ol6vht5lQXI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioner Jay Monahan of the PGA Tour may be the first top executive of a professional sports organization to stop drawing a salary this month. Much of the attention by sports fans has been on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/2020\/03\/18\/coronavirus-impacting-sports-and-professional-athletes-getting-paid\/5068551002\/\">status of paychecks<\/a> for athletes now that the NBA, NHL, and MLS have suspended their seasons and Major League Baseball has pushed back its openers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MLB players\nand those on the 40-man roster, who normally don\u2019t get paid by their teams\nuntil the start of the season, are receiving $1,100 a week from the MLB Players\nAssociation through at least April 9, when team payrolls are supposed to kick\nin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NBA players have been receiving their regular paychecks, but the league reportedly can activate the <em>force majeure<\/em> clause of the collective bargaining agreement that would allow owners to withhold a portion of salaries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHL has said that its players will receive their final three regular-season paychecks and the MLS, whose season had just started, is continuing to pay players. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commissioner Jay Monahan is not taking a paycheck while the PGA Tour is suspended by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":140,"featured_media":1121807,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4898],"tags":[8429,13907,66626],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.3 (Yoast SEO v22.9) -
