On top of it all, however, Shaq is a lifelong student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many NBA fans might not know that O'Neal is the proud recipient of a doctoral degree. His <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/shaquille-oneal-said-a-geek-saved-his-life-when-he-was-in-high-school\/\">commitment to education<\/a> is a sticking point for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shaquille-o-neal-goes-to-college\">Shaquille O'Neal goes to college<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shaq initially followed the path of many others when <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/remembering-shaquille-oneals-epic-battle-with-hank-gathers-30-years-ago\/\">he attended Louisiana State University<\/a>. Although he valued his education, he knew he faced a lucrative NBA career as the consensus No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. O'Neal began at LSU in 1989 and, according to him, knew he wanted to finish with his degree no matter what, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/12\/16\/sports\/pro-basketball-after-8-years-o-neal-adds-college-degree-to-his-resume.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If Ben Simmons goes No. 1 overall, he will join Shaquille O\u2019Neal as the only No. 1 picks from LSU in the NBA Draft. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6CfJkpgjCb\">pic.twitter.com\/6CfJkpgjCb<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ESPN Stats &amp; Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESPNStatsInfo\/status\/746062842411909120?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years later, he left for the NBA, putting his educational goals on hold. Despite his status as an NBA superstar, he wanted to get his degree and used his parents as motivation. &#8220;I promised my parents I'd do it. I promised myself I'd do it,&#8221; O'Neal said of earning his degree. &#8220;It took eight years; it should have taken six or seven. I had some other engagements.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That eight-year wait ended in 2000 when O'Neal famously missed a game against the Vancouver Grizzlies to attend his college graduation from LSU.\u00a0&#8220;Here he is, almost 30, and he's graduating from college,&#8221; Phil Jackson said per <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Sports\/story?id=100078&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC News<\/a>. &#8220;He's persevered to do it. We wish him well in his graduation; it's a wonderful thing to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every player needs to finish their education. LeBron James hasn't even gone to college. O'Neal, however, wanted his degree and wouldn't stop with his bachelor's. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-becoming-dr-shaq\">Becoming &#8216;Dr. Shaq' <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Five years after receiving his degree and fresh off his tumultuous ending <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/shaquille-oneal-welcomed-tyronn-lue-to-lakers-with-dinner-invitation-20000-in-cash\/\">with the Lakers<\/a>, O'Neal received another diploma. He got his master's degree in business thanks to the University of Phoenix's online opportunities, reports Harvard blog <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/lamont\/2012\/05\/07\/shaquille-oneals-uop-masters-degree-brings-out-the-critics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ipso Facto<\/a>. He took what he learned and applied it to his craft away from the court, but he didn't stop there.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendees at a 2012 convocation for Barry University saw one particularly large graduate in their midst, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/7895681\/shaquille-oneal-receives-doctoral-degree-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN<\/a>. Recently retired from the NBA, O'Neal finished his educational goal and received his doctorate in business along with 1,100 other students. O'Neal put himself in an exclusive club of pro athletes with doctorates. He is not technically a Ph.D. but received his Ed.D (Doctor of Education).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shaquille-o-neal-passes-it-on\">Shaquille O'Neal passes it on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shaq'ss love for education does not stop there, however. Now a father to six adult and teenage children, O'Neal wants to instill his love of learning into the next generation of his family. This way, they can invest their finances similarly to how he does while also learning valuable life lessons.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off the court, O'Neal has had about as much success as he did on it.
