Oklahoma State administrators started distancing themselves\nfrom the football coach \u2018s controversial remarks regarding coronavirus shortly\nafter he spoke Tuesday, but Gundy didn\u2019t issue his statement until four days\nlater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mike Gundy\u2019s apology could have used a rewrite<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Statement from Mike Gundy: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/o4Bz4wyOWd\">pic.twitter.com\/o4Bz4wyOWd<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Athletic CFB (@TheAthleticCFB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAthleticCFB\/status\/1249056618387574785?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 11, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-10-highest-paid-college-football-coaches-in-2019\/\">Mike Gundy<\/a> opened his apology by saying he had \u201cbeen made aware\u201d that his remarks earlier in the week \u201chave offended some.\u201d In fact, what Gundy said Tuesday did upset people who\u2019ve lost family members or otherwise had their lives disrupted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-the-ncaa-cancel-the-2020-college-football-season\/\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gundy was speaking during a conference call about his desire to get players back on campus early next month to prepare for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/would-summer-college-football-work-this-year\/\">2020 college football season<\/a>. He compared the coronavirus to the flu and suggested that young athletes would be less likely to suffer severe symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some\nmight have been willing to excuse his eagerness as a rallying cry of sorts to raise\nthe spirits of a population worn down by quarantines and continued bad news\nabout the economy. But then he finished with this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s\nsome people that are asymptomatic. If that\u2019s true, then we sequester them, and\npeople say that\u2019s crazy. No, it\u2019s not crazy, because we need to continue to\nbudget and run money through the state of Oklahoma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That remark was universally panned, as was his reference to the athletic department as a company, making life uncomfortable for Oklahoma State administrators and then the coach himself, who may not have undone any of the damage with the <a href=\"https:\/\/larrybrownsports.com\/college-football\/mike-gundy-apologizes-coronavirus-comments\/545886\">three-sentence apology<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mike Gundy is no stranger to controversy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oklahoma State Football Coach Mike Gundy Upset\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aoMmbUmKN0E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporters\ninstinctively dig up Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m a man\u201d\nrant whenever he says or does something outlandish, but his greatest hits\nextend beyond that tirade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\na testy session with reporters two years ago, Gundy said he was forbidding questions about Oklahoma State players who\u2019d\nentered the transfer portal. He said at the time that anyone raising such questions\nwould lose access to Cowboys players and then he doubled down by declaring that\nanyone who reported what he\u2019d just said would face the same consequences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.normantranscript.com\/sports\/national_sports\/horning-mike-gundys-an-empty-suit-whose-time-has-come-to-exit\/article_66dfaec1-3ca9-56b9-9150-703dddb3caa2.html\">A newspaper reported<\/a> that he continued by calling Twitter \u201ca platform for people that are sitting at home drawing an unemployment check.\u201d That may have come as a surprise to the 112,000 followers he had on the social media platform at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he finished his day by blaming the transfer portal, which\nbrings at least some degree of order to the process of changing schools, on \u201cliberalism.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">He\u2019s better at coaching football than he is at public relations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy targeting May 1st for players and employees to return | Get Up\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rOO3Nm_n2Cg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A coach whose teams win consistently tends to be given the benefit of the doubt in a football-loving state, which begs the question of whether Mike Gundy can afford to put himself <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/college-football-coaches-with-the-worst-reputations\/\">under the microscope<\/a> very much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gundy\narrived at Oklahoma State, where he played quarterback in the late 1980s, as\nnew head coach Les Miles\u2019 offensive coordinator in 2001. OSU immediately\npromoted him to head coach when Miles left for LSU after the 2004 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven\nplayers were expelled during a 2005 season that ended with a 4-7 record, but two\nstraight 7-6 seasons were followed by a pair of 9-4 records that presented\nGundy with job security. His two best seasons, a combined 23-3 in 2010-11,\nfollowed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gundy\u2019s overall record is 129-64, but the Cowboys were just 7-6 in 2018 and 8-5 last fall.
