The all-time NBA great earned just $93 million on the court, and more than two-thirds of that came in his final two seasons with the Chicago Bulls in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, anyone who has ever laced up a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-real-story-behind-the-most-famous-air-jordans\/\">basketball sneaker<\/a>, eaten a Big Mac or sipped from a Gatorade bottle is aware that Jordan made his real fortune in endorsements. And that is the money responsible for what is likely the biggest divorce settlement ever for an athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018The Last Dance\u2019 may enlighten us<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exclusive extended scenes from &#039;The Last Dance&#039; feat. Michael Jordan and Jerry Krause | ESPN\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BUTIWuyXgp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With almost nothing else to watch for more than a month in the way of live action, many sports fans are eager to see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-some-may-forget-about-the-last-dance-season-of-the-chicago-bulls\/\">The Last Dance<\/a><\/em>, the ESPN series that begins Sunday night. The multi-part documentary is largely about the peak of Michael Jordan\u2019s career in the 1990s with the Chicago Bulls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courtesy of trailers and assorted leaks, we already know that the series will explore more than just Jordan\u2019s success on the court. Jordan has already said he expects <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-jordan-worries-last-dance-will-make-him-seem-like-a-horrible-guy\/\">unflattering details<\/a> about his life to be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether that includes delving\ndeeply into Jordan\u2019s first marriage remains to be seen. Jordan and Juanita\nVanoy married in 1989, separated in 2002, and announced their divorce in 2006. Juanita\nJordan, 42 years old at the time, cited \u201cirreconcilable differences\u201d when she\nfirst filed for the divorce in 2002. The first\nof their three children had already been born by the time they married in September\n1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they split for good at\nthe end of 2006, the basketball star had accumulated a fortune from his line of\nAir Jordan shoes with Nike and endorsement deals with the likes of Gatorade,\nHanes, and McDonald\u2019s. Estimates of the time put his net worth anywhere from\n$400 million to $500 million, with the higher number the more likely of the\ntwo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That set the table for one of\nthe most expensive divorce settlements ever. Forbes reported in 2013 that Jordan earned $80 million the previous year from his endorsements and a sprawling empire including restaurants and a car dealership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan\u2019s fortune was reported to be $650 million by the time he married model Yvette Prieto in 2013. Prieto agreed to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2013-03-20\/michael-jordan-demands-pre-nup-protect-650-million-wealth\">prenuptial agreement<\/a> much more favorable to her husband. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms reportedly call for her to receive $1 million for each year married if they divorce.
