Maybe you <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/san-antonio-spurs-legend-tim-duncan-keeps-winning-even-as-a-head-coach\/\">associate him with winning<\/a>; alternatively, you could remember his famous bank shot as either <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tim-duncan-was-so-nice-he-taught-opponents-how-to-beat-him\/\">boring or fundamentally sound<\/a>. In all likelihood, however, you probably wouldn't call him scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Tim Duncan is human, though. In fact, his fear of sharks led directly to a $242 million basketball career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tim Duncan's start as a swimmer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tim Duncan was training to make the National Swimming Team for the 1992 Olympics. Unsurprisingly, he spent plenty of time swimming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I grew up swimming since I was about five,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/video\/2016\/12\/18\/20161218-duncan-swimming\">Duncan explained in an NBA video<\/a>. &#8220;I was having fun with it, and I was really good at it at the time. I used to swim anywhere from 5,000 meters to 8,000 meters a day, six days a week. I expected at some point to be in the Olympics representing the Virgin Islands.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of Duncan's times and records<a href=\"https:\/\/swimpractice.com\/blogs\/news\/tim-duncan-didn-t-beat-michael-phelps-and-ryan-lochte-at-swimming-as-a-kid-and-here-s-proof\"> have been lost to history<\/a>, there's no reason to doubt that <a href=\"https:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/2017\/06\/san-antonio-spurs-tim-duncan-robert-horry-espn-work-ethic-question-training-camp-story\">his famous work ethic<\/a> would have translated into swimming success. Before he reached the Olympics, though, fate would intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A life-changing fear of sharks <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Halftime Story on Tim Duncan&#039;s Virgin Island Roots (1999 NBA Finals)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JAPLPMMpkpc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fall of 1989, however, Tim Duncan's swimming career was put on hold. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/21137486\/tim-duncan-brings-hope-hometown-hit-hard-hurricanes\">Hurricane Hugo tore through the Caribbean<\/a>, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake; on St. Croix, the local Olympic-sized swimming pool was destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a pool to practice in, Duncan's swims were moved to the ocean. While swimming through waves wasn't ideal, the teenager had a bigger problem: <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/117431-the-silent-giant\">he was afraid of sharks<\/a>. That reality led him to pick up a basketball, rather than hitting the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after, Duncan's mother <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-tragedy-turned-tim-duncan-into-an-nba-hall-of-famer\/\">lost her battle with breast cancer<\/a>. In that tragedy, everything came together. The teenager no longer wanted to swim and had promised his mom that he would earn a college degree; he eventually found solace on the basketball court and used his talents to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120105052444\/http:\/\/www.slamduncan.com\/news-21questions.php\">live up to his vow.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tim Duncan turned into an NBA great<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tim Duncan honored to enter HOF with an amazing class | SportsCenter\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_DYDopZMRO4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While basketball wasn't Tim Duncan's first love, he eventually blossomed into an incredible talent. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/sports\/wp\/2016\/07\/11\/tim-duncans-legendary-career-began-by-dominating-alzono-mourning-at-age-16\/\">outplaying Alonzo Morning <\/a>as a 16-year-old, his fate as a future star was sealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duncan headed to the mainland and played his college ball at Wake Forest. Although he couldn't help the Demon Deacons claim a national title, the big man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/tim-duncan-1.html\">did just about everything else<\/a>. He averaged 16.4 points and 12.3 rebounds during his four collegiate seasons, took home <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/awards\/wooden.html\">the 1997 John Wooden Award<\/a> as men\u2019s player of the year, and earned a psychology degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Ducan entered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/draft\/NBA_1997.html\">the 1997 NBA draft<\/a>, becoming the first overall pick. He proved to be a star from the start, every Rookie of the Month award before being named Rookie of the Year. That campaign, of course, would prove to be the start of a long and decorated career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ducan spent 19 seasons in the pros, averaging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duncati01.html\">19 points and 10.8 rebounds<\/a> per game; he helped the Spurs win five titles,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/san-antonio-spurs\/tim-duncan-2703\/cash-earnings\/\"> earned more than $242 million<\/a>, and will officially<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/hall-of-fame-class-of-2020-revealed\"> enter the Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a> in August.
