But the deeper that the media digs, the more we learn about how immersed Jordan was becoming a legitimate baseball player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beginning\nof Jordan\u2019s foray into baseball was conducted in such clandestine fashion that few\npeople were there to observe the intensity from the start. One of them was Herm\nSchneider, who spent 40 seasons as the trainer for the Chicago White Sox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White Sox chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/the-chicago-bulls-are-worth-almost-200-times-more-than-what-jerry-reinsdorf-paid-for-the-franchise-in-1985\/\">Jerry Reinsdorf<\/a> enlisted Schneider to prepare Jordan for what turned out to be one season with the Birmingham Barons. No one was more surprised at being entrusted with such responsibility than Schneider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reinsdorf\nowned both the Bulls and White Sox, so he was one of the first people to know\nJordan\u2019s intention to swap basketballs for baseballs. He also knew that he had\nan enormous investment to protect, prompting him to call upon the trainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Schneider recounted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/rbj.net\/2020\/05\/13\/trainer-from-rochester-played-vital-role-in-michael-jordans-switch-to-baseball\/\">Rochester Business Journal<\/a>, Reinsdorf met with him in November 1993 to tell the trainer to get Jordan conditioned for spring training less than three months away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything at first, but my look said it all, I thought my boss was pulling my leg. But Jerry quickly made it clear he was serious. He says <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/lebron-james-says-he-learned-this-from-watching-michael-jordan\/\">Michael Jordan<\/a> would have been the valedictorian even if there had been a hundred others to teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\nwas never a case of me having to push Michael,\u2019\u2019 Schneider said. \u201cIt was often\na case of having to hold him back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfirst 10 days consisted primarily of routine weight training and stretching\naimed at preparing Jordan for what thousands of swings in a short time would do\nto his shoulders and arms. Once the live drills began with help from former\nplayers Bill Melton and Mike Huff, Jordan worked with such ferocity that Schneider\nworried that he would injure himself before reaching spring training in\nFlorida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMichael\nwas constantly pushing the limits,\u2019\u2019 Schneider said \u201cHe was so thirsty for\nknowledge about the game and always wanted to do extra drills. He\u2019d hit until\nhis hands bled. Part of it was to avoid distractions, but it was also to give everyone deniability in case the experiment flopped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan\nwould show up each morning for four or five hours of work, and trainer Herm Schneider\nwould open the gates and have Jordan park out of public view. It was only when\nthe workouts moved to a college gym so that Jordan could field fly balls that\nsports fans learned what was going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nworkouts moved to Sarasota, Florida, about 10 days before the White Sox\nreported to spring training so that Jordan could get some meaningful outdoor\nwork. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schneider\nrecalled taking Jordan grocery shopping late one night when there were barely\nany customers \u2013 until word got around rather quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithin\na half-hour, the store is packed, and people are surrounding Michael, asking\nfor autographs and taking their pictures with him,\u201d Schneider said. \u201cThis is\n1994, so there aren\u2019t any cellphones, but the word still spread like wildfire.\nThat\u2019s when I realized how tough it was being Michael Jordan.
