A British musician, M.I.A. had collaborated with multiple popular Americans and her songs had been sampled by the world's top rappers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/a-former-san-francisco-49er-reveals-how-nfl-players-really-feel-about-the-super-bowl-halftime-show\/\">M.I.A.<\/a> had the opportunity of a lifetime when she performed at halftime of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/football\">Super Bowl<\/a> in 2012. She rose to prominence through early social media sites like MySpace and released her first album, <em>Arular<\/em>, in 2005. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HM.I.A. released five studio albums in full and has earned three Grammmy Award nominations. Her 2007 song, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pu5eYuBC0Io\">Paper Planes<\/a>,&#8221; peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and is considered one of her top songs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapper T.I. sampled it on the song &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oxQZxI0mxQQ\">Swagga Like Us<\/a>&#8221; in 2008. Other rappers, including 50 Cent, released unofficial remixes or freestyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of that is to say by 2012, Americans knew who M.I.A. was. After years of older acts like Prince, The Who, and Bruce Springsteen, the NFL returned to a more modern act, the Black Eyed Peas, in February 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year later, Madonna took the stage with guests LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, CeeLo Green, and M.I.A. The group performed at halftime of a game between the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/osi-umenyiora-went-from-45-million-defensive-end-to-award-winning-british-sportscaster\/\">New York Giants<\/a> and New England Patriots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, people wanted to see how the halftime show went; the performance drew a record 114 million viewers, which was higher than the actual game's 111.3 million viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the performance of &#8220;Give Me All Your Luvin,'&#8221; M.I.A. censored herself and didn't say an expletive. Instead, she extended her middle finger to the camera and earned universal criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The NFL sued M.I.A. for that gesture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"M.I.A. By March 2012, the NFL filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheartradio.ca\/news\/m-i-a-opens-up-about-ridiculous-nfl-lawsuit-1.3718517\">lawsuit<\/a> against M.I.A. for $1.5 million; the lawsuit claimed she breached their contract and ruined the NFL's &#8220;goodwill and reputation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/former-nfl-quarterback-dieter-brock-used-weighted-footballs-to-train\/\">NFL<\/a> reportedly added another $15 million to the lawsuit in March of 2014. In a 2014 interview with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huckmagazine.com\/art-and-culture\/music-2\/mia-film-matangi-maya-mia-interview\/\">Huck Magazine<\/a>, M.I.A. revealed what the NFL's terms in said lawsuit were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe lawsuit was so ridiculous, it proposed that they would keep 100% of my earnings for the rest of my life if I ever earned more than $2 million.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Both sides settled the lawsuit later in 2014 for an unknown amount of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, though, the NFL didn't learn much from that lawsuit. Recent Super Bowl halftimes have featured rappers openly swearing and, earlier this year, lewd and inappropriate dancing from Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NFL has not yet announced who will perform at Super Bowl 54.
