However, this battle is a feud with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-many-ufc-fighters-have-died-in-the-ring\/\">UFC<\/a> boss <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dana-white-is-begging-mike-tyson-to-stop-comeback-attempt\/\">Dana White<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White has enough on his mind keeping\nthe UFC cards on schedule as the United States shows signs of coming out of the\ncoronavirus pandemic while some other nations are still struggling. He doesn\u2019t\nneed to add sparring with the UFC light heavyweight champion on a daily basis\nto his to-do list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three reasons White should call Jones\u2019 bluff and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mma\/story\/_\/id\/29247280\/jon-jones-says-relinquish-ufc-light-heavyweight-belt\">release him<\/a> from his contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jon Jones can\u2019t stay out of trouble with the UFC or police<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jon Jones says he&#039;ll drop the UFC light heavyweight title | SportsCenter\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9hur3HYyO28?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/mike-tyson-should-be-thrilled-that-he-turned-dana-white-into-a-hypocrite\/\"><strong>Mike Tyson Should Be Thrilled Dana White Looks Like a Hypocrite<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-jon-jones-fight-in-the-ufc-again\/\">Jon Jones<\/a> probably doesn\u2019t understand why the MMA world collectively smirks at his announcement that he will give up his UFC lightweight belt. Jones generally doesn\u2019t have to surrender the belt since UFC boss Dana White has had to strip him of it on a fairly regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones had made eight\nsuccessful defenses of his title before being stripped of his belt in April\n2015 for violating the UFC\u2019s code of conduct policy. He won the title back in\nApril 2016 by beating Daniel Cormier \u2013 only to have the belt stripped again\nbecause clomiphene and letrozole showed up in his system when the pre-fight testing\ncame back from the lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He beat Cormier again in July\n2017 to regain the UFC light heavyweight crown \u2026 only to have it removed once\nmore, this time after testing positive for turinabol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jones\nwon the championship for the fourth time by beating Alexander Gustafsson in\nDecember 2018 and has held it since, although his three defenses since have all\nbeen by decision \u2013 two of them unconvincing &#8212; rather than submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The April 2015 penalty stemmed from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mma\/story\/_\/id\/12783425\/jon-jones-stripped-light-heavyweight-title-suspended-ufc\">a felony arrest<\/a> in connection with a hit-and-run incident, one of multiple times Jones has been detained over traffic infractions. Most recently, he was arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on March 26, 2020, after failing a field sobriety test and then a breathalyzer test. Multiple charges, including negligent use of a firearm, were consolidated into a plea deal on the DWI charge resulting in four days of house arrest, 48 hours of community service, and one year of probation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The UFC has a large stable of talent<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jon Jones Top 5 Finishes\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ebeQBYvWKsw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/will-jon-jones-and-daniel-cormier-ever-fight-again\/\"><strong>Will Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier Ever Fight Again?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Jones doesn\u2019t fight all\nthat often. Jones joined the UFC and was machine-like in fighting 16 times (winning\n15 times) in the first 44 months. There have been just 11 bouts in the eight\nand a half years since. Some of that is a function of taking well-deserved time\noff. But there have been suspensions and time away to take care of the numerous\nlegal issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, Jones has created other headaches for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dana-white-conor-mcgregor-and-ufc-alumni-honor-bruce-lee-as-the-father-of-mixed-martial-arts\/\">Dana White<\/a>. When Dan Henderson had to bow out of a UFC card in September 2012, Jones refused a late request to take a fight against Chael Sonnen. It resulted in the UFC having to cancel a card for the first time in its history; Jones had no reservation with hopping onto the next UFC card three weeks later to collect a check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UFC has a wealth of talent besides Jones, beginning with heavyweights Daniel Cormier and Francis Ngannou. In Jones\u2019 division, Dominick Reyes and Thiago Santos are big enough names to carry cards. In the lower weight divisions, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/conor-mcgregor-and-anderson-silva-agree-to-super-fight\/\">Conor McGregor<\/a>, Justin Gaethje, and Tony Ferguson are among the many who come to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Jones is probably the\nbiggest name in the history of the UFC, but he\u2019s not the only star. The UFC has\nother men (and women) who can fill the arena and ring up pay-per-view buys when\nthe sport is allowed to get back to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Pay the position, not the person\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Does Anthony Smith think Jon Jones is a Dirty Fighter? It stems from Jones\u2019 interest\nin making the jump to the heavyweight division, which would certainly be of\ninterest to MMA fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The heart of the dispute involves money. Jones accuses White of lying how much the lightweight champ is asking for that next fight, but there\u2019s no disputing that Jones wants a lot &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mma\/news\/jon-jones-says-he-will-relinquish-ufc-light-heavyweight-championship-over-pay-dispute\/\">$15 million<\/a> is a number that\u2019s been kicked around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem is that the UFC\nhas been hit just as hard as the likes of the NBA and MLB by the coronavirus\npandemic. The UFC has restarted more quickly than most, but there are still\nproblems to deal with, such as revenue lost by being unable to pack an arena\nwith 18,000 MMA fans under current conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dana White is more of a businessman than Jon Jones can ever be. He understands that one of the fundamental requirements for running an enterprise successfully is that you pay the position, not the person. Simply, it means that if <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ufc-stars-pile-on-jon-jones-after-champions-latest-arrest\/\">Jon Jones<\/a> is not worth $15 million \u2013 or whatever his demand is \u2013 as a light heavyweight, then it\u2019s hard to make the case to pay him that much as a heavyweight when that division already has stars of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line? Jon Jones isn't going anywhere.
