Over the years, he's cultivated and sustained a culture that preaches respect, humility, and toughness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the 71-year-old is more than just a basketball coach. His wisdom and unique way of thinking make him one of the most respected leaders in the sports world. As the United States and the world at large continue to deal with the aftermath of George Floyd's death, everyone has focused on Donald Trump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That includes Popovich, who has never been afraid to voice his opinion on controversial issues. Ironically, a man who is in charge of a basketball team delivered much more powerful words than the president of the United States. He's never had a losing season in 22 full seasons as the head coach of the Spurs. Just think about that for a minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to doing his job, Popovich is a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"master at his craft (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/gregg-popovich-has-an-incredibly-expensive-secret-to-nba-success\/\" >master at his craft<\/a>. Early in his career, he paired veteran <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"David Robinson (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/durants-mvp-award-carries-strong-emotions-echoes-of-david-robinson\/\" >David Robinson<\/a> with a young <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tim-duncan-was-so-nice-he-taught-opponents-how-to-beat-him\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tim Duncan (opens in a new tab)\">Tim Duncan<\/a> and won two NBA titles. Once The Admiral retired, Duncan took over as the face of the franchise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of a player-coach relationship, the Spurs couldn't have dreamed for a better fit. Duncan never said much and instead led by example. After all, you don't build a basketball dynasty without being able to motivate men. However, a man who gets paid to coach a game shouldn't have to tell the president how to do his job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popovich provided some eye-opening comments in a story by Dave Zirin of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/society\/gregg-popovich-george-floyd-protests\/\">The Nation<\/a> about Donald Trump and his response to the riots in the wake of George Floyd's death. According to Popovich, Trump really only needs to say three words to show the leadership that America needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIt\u2019s so clear what needs to be done. We need a president to come out and say simply that black lives matter. Just say those three words. But he won\u2019t, and he can\u2019t. He can\u2019t because it\u2019s more important to him to mollify the small group of followers who validate his insanity. But it\u2019s more than just Trump. The system has to change. I\u2019ll do whatever I can do to help, because that\u2019s what leaders do. But he can\u2019t do anything to put us on a positive path, because he\u2019s not a leader.<br><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spurs coach didn't hold back his criticism. In fact, he took it to the next level while referring to Trump as a &#8220;deranged idiot.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cHe\u2019s not just divisive. He\u2019s a destroyer. To be in his presence makes you die. He will eat you alive for his own purposes. I\u2019m appalled that we have a leader who can\u2019t say, \u2018Black lives matter.\u2019 That\u2019s why he hides in the White House basement. He is a coward. He creates a situation and runs away like a grade-schooler. Luckily, Gregg Popovich has always stood up for what's right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years ago, he spoke about some of the same issues that we are facing right now. In a press conference, the legendary NBA coach said, &#8220;Unless it is talked about constantly, it's not gonna get better.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks in small part to Gregg Popovich, we are talking about the issue.
