The little-known linebacker didn\u2019t rise through the\nranks to eventually find his level of incompetence. Sure, Scott Norwood kicked\none wide right to all but end a genuine nail-biter  between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills,\nbut just about every other NFL Championship Game from 1984-95 was a snoozefest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tide turned in January\n1996 as Super Bowl XXX began a long run of mostly close, entertaining contests\nto wrap up the NFL season. With perhaps two exceptions, the next 20 Super Bowls\nlived up to the hype, and one of the clunkers was saved by one commercial in\nparticular &#8212; Reebok introducing the world to Terry Tate: Office Linebacker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Terry Tate ad campaign was\nbuilt around the fictional linebacker played by Lester Speight, hired to\nimprove the efficiency of a corporate office. He did it by brute force \u2013\nliterally running down and tackling Felcher and Sons company employees for transgressions such as\nplaying Solitaire on their desktop computer or\nfailing to start a new pot after pouring the last cup of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ad campaign that began in 2002 was inspired\nby a short film pilot shot in 2000. The minute-long commercial shown as the\nTampa Bay Buccaneers were thrashing the Oakland Raiders, 48-21, was an instant\nhit with TV viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was just one problem \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Viewers loved Terry Tate, but not Reebok<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Terry Tate - Office Linebacker\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x5dJb2YG7vU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/footballs-first-family-takes-to-tv-for-funny-commercial\/\"><strong>Football\u2019s First Family Takes to TV for Funny Commercial<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reebok\nspent millions on a series of Terry Tate commercials in 2002 with memorable\nbanter including, \u201c\u2019Cuz when\nit's game time, it's pain time&#8221; ahead\nof the Super Bowl that made the character an overnight sensation. But even as\nthe spots remained water-cooler fodder in the days after Super Bowl XXXVII,\nReebok founder Joseph Foster was making the decision to end the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nproblem? Viewers remembered the commercial and adored actor Lester Speight, but within even just a few minutes\nafter watching, they had no recollection that it was an advertisement for\nReebok. In short, the writing and acting were better than the branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, Reebok was not gaining the brand\nawareness that should have been translating into increased sales for athletic\nshoes and apparel. The anticipated big increase in store traffic never\nmaterialized. Reebok had won the battle for eyeballs and lost the war for\nconsumer dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsiveinboundmarketing.com\/blog\/a-tale-of-how-terry-tate-was-benched-a-brand-management-satire\">a marketing blog<\/a> phrased it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf the consumer is not left with a sense of who you are and what you do, you've failed. If it has not spiked a sense of interest in your company, even if it's small, you've failed. He gave\nup the wrestling career in 1997 to pursue acting, picking up a string of small movie\nroles including in <em>Any Given Sunday<\/em> and <em>Cradle 2 the Grave<\/em> and\npicking up television appearances as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reprised the Terry Tate role in 2008 and 2016 as part of\ncampaigns to promote voter registration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The &#8220;Terry Tate: Office Linebacker&#8221;
