{"id":1205344,"date":"2020-07-15T14:57:05","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T18:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1205344"},"modified":"2020-07-15T22:16:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-16T02:16:23","slug":"rocky-bleier-survived-a-grenade-injury-and-won-four-super-bowls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/rocky-bleier-survived-a-grenade-injury-and-won-four-super-bowls\/","title":{"rendered":"Rocky Bleier Survived a Grenade Injury and Won Four Super Bowls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Like many other Americans, Rocky Bleier left his job to fight in the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike most of his fellow soldiers, though, Bleier was an NFL running back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later known for his heroics alongside Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris on the <a href=\"http:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/pittsburgh-steelers\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> dynasty of the 1970s, Bleier traded in his cleats for boots when the U.S. Army drafted him in 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Bleier survived a horrific injury in Vietnam, that didn't stop him from becoming a Super Bowl champion. This is his story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rocky Bleier played 11 seasons with the Steelers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rocky Bleier\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ReIzvEPFbmI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/franco-harris-went-on-a-wild-and-memorable-hunt-for-turf-from-the-immaculate-reception\/\"><strong>Franco Harris Went on a Wild and Memorable Hunt for Turf From the \u2018Immaculate Reception\u2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A bruising running back who played collegiately at Notre Dame, Rocky Bleier played a crucial role on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/mean-joe-greenes-iconic-coca-cola-commerical-was-almost-ruined-by-an-uncomfortable-on-set-issue\/\">1970s Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bleier used his 5-foot-11, 210-pound frame to spring crushing blocks and, later, pound the rock with ease. Bleier totaled 3,865 yards and 23 touchdowns on 4.2 yards per carry in 11 seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1975-78, Bleier averaged 666 yards and four touchdowns per year. He even posted a 1,036-yard campaign in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bleier also served as a reliable pass-catcher when <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/was-terry-bradshaw-a-great-quarterback\/\">Terry Bradshaw threw his way<\/a>. A nearby grenade sent shrapnel into his lower right leg. Bleier, who served as a squad grenadier, also lost part of his right foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors at a Toyko hospital told Bleier, who received a Purple Heart, that he would never play football again. Although he trained with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/hey-kid-catch-mean-joe-greenes-iconic-coke-commercial-40-years-later\/\">Steelers teammates that year<\/a>, he didn't return to NFL action until 1971, when he saw action in six games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bleier played sporadically the next few years &#8212; Pittsburgh even waived him on multiple occasions &#8212; before he got his chance in 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1975, Bleier held the starting role and teamed up with Franco Harris in the backfield. Bleier scored four career postseason touchdowns and retired after the 1980 season with four rings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bleier hasn't shied away from sharing his story. He wrote a book called <em>Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story<\/em>, which later became a television movie. Bleier acted in a one-man play and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CgIUREIwpos\">returned to Vietnam<\/a> with ESPN's Tom Rinaldi in the summer of 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip took a lot out of Bleier.
