The NFL team agreed to the request last month, but t left the Bills in a tight spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even under the best of conditions, losing a major sponsor so close to the start of the season makes finding a replacement difficult. Factor in the recession brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic \u2013 plus the dearth of Fortune 500 companies locally &#8212; and the task becomes impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, the stadium doesn\u2019t have much time remaining. The Bills\u2019 lease expires in 2023, and talks have been taking place for a couple of years about the team\u2019s future home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bills moved to what was then called Rich Stadium in 1973 after starting out in the AFL days playing at War Memorial Stadium, affectionately nicknamed the Rockpile. It\u2019s almost certain they\u2019ll be playing in their third stadium by the middle of the decade, so selling naming rights to the old place becomes even more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s how their current facility came to be named Bills Stadium in an announcement made Aug. 20. Quite simply, the Bills had no other options \u2026 until now. That's because <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-is-barstool-sports-founder-dave-portnoys-net-worth\/\">Dave Portnoy<\/a> had a brainstorm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports is interested in a Buffalo Bills deal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After a brief conversation with those who matter I am here to say we are very serious about buying the naming rights of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BuffaloBills?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BuffaloBills<\/a> stadium and will enter the process.<\/p>&mdash; Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stoolpresidente\/status\/1296488285548707843?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 20, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tredavious-white-was-mad-but-did-buffalo-bills-fans-or-management-set-him-off\/\">Tre\u2019Davious White Was Mad, but Did Buffalo Bills Fans or Management Set Him Off?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon seeing the announcement that the Buffalo Bills will call their home field Bills Stadium this fall due to a lack of sponsorship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgrz.com\/article\/sports\/nfl\/bills\/bartstool-sports-founder-dave-portnoy-very-serious-about-buying-naming-rights-to-bills-stadium\/71-782da342-8cee-4351-bf98-c90760144266\">Dave Portnoy took an interest<\/a>. Portnoy, the founder and president of Barstool Sports, said on social media he is &#8220;very serious\u201d about buying the naming rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portnoy said he has entered the process for landing the naming rights. The New Era Cap Co. is believed to have been <a href=\"https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/sports\/bills\/the-newest-name-of-the-football-field-in-orchard-park-bills-stadium\/article_a613fc5e-e0b9-11ea-bee3-3f9c5fdf944a.html\">paying around $4 million a year<\/a> for those rights. Portnoy could rightfully expect to come in quite a bit lower given that there obviously is no one else in the running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only known offer to buy the naming rights came immediately after New Era bailed out. Tushy, a bidet manufacturer, reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkupstate.com\/buffalo-bills\/2020\/07\/buffalo-bills-receive-first-bid-for-stadium-naming-rights-from-bidet-toilet-company-tushy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offered up to $12.5 million<\/a>, but Erie County officials, who must approve deals for naming rights, looked at the company\u2019s proposal to bring a college bowl game (\u201cThe Toilet Bowl\u201d) to town and rejected the bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The NFL doesn\u2019t like Dave Portnoy and Barstool Sports<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I think if we let the people of Buffalo vote on whether they\u2019d be proud to call Bills Stadium Barstool Sports Park (I like park more than stadium) we\u2019d get close to 90% approval. But seeing \u201cBarstool Sports Park\u201d in every story about a Buffalo Bills home game would rub Goodell the wrong way. The Barstool Sports website is controversial all by itself, but Portnoy and Goodell have a personal battle in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Portnoy has long been a thorn in the side of Goodell, openly mocking him by selling T-shirts taunting him. When the NFL held an auction for COVID-19 relief in which the winner would watch an NFL game with Goodell, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/roger-goodells-biggest-critic-just-paid-250450-to-watch-football-with-him\/\">Portnoy posted the winning bid of $250,450<\/a>. The NFL rejected the bid on the basis of past skirmishes with Portnoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Goodell hails from Jamestown. New York, 90 minutes southwest of Buffalo. He\u2019s shown no particular affinity toward the Bills as commissioner, but one has to wonder whether Portnoy partnering with the Bills is where he would draw the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It shouldn\u2019t be. The Bills lost years worth or revenue while the former Rich Stadium was named after then-owner Ralph Wilson because he thought offers for naming rights came in too low.
