Ewing now coaches Georgetown, and fellow alum <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dikembe-mutombo-lost-250000-on-a-last-minute-decision\/\">Dikembe Mutombo\u2019s<\/a> son may give the Hoyas the same sort of lift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Patrick Ewing began an impressive line of Georgetown big men<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dikembe Mutombo Top 10 Blocks of His Career\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qGDZ3S5Y2MI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-was-john-thompsons-net-worth\/\">What Was John Thompson\u2019s Net Worth?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgetown has already gone to the NCAA Tournament in men\u2019s basketball in three consecutive seasons under John Thompson Sr. before Patrick Ewing\u2019s arrival, but the Hoyas were playing primarily what would be considered \u201csmall ball\u201d today. That changed when the 7-foot Ewing became the key piece at both ends of the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ewing was not a dominant scorer at 15.3 points a game over four seasons, but he was a rebounder and an intimidating shot blocker, and Georgetown rode him to one NCAA championship and two other trips to the final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ewing also served as a recruiting poster. The way he elevated the Hoyas helped Thompson to get into the homes of recruits of post players who were previously inaccessible. In the decade that followed, Michael Graham, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dikembe-mutombo-has-saved-countless-lives-since-leaving-the-nba\/\">Dikembe Mutombo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/alonzo-mourning-and-larry-johnsons-legendary-beef-is-deeper-than-fans-thought\/\">Alonzo Mourning<\/a>, and Othella Harrington were among the big men who kept the program among the Division I elites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dikembe Mutombo was something special<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dikembe Mutombo Does Celebrity Impressions\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hg2Nso2iJLc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/john-thompson-won-2-nba-titles-as-a-player-before-starting-his-coaching-career\/\">John Thompson Won 2 NBA Titles as a Player Before Starting His Coaching Career<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all the low-post players who followed, Dikembe Mutombo may have been most similar to Patrick Ewing. The 7-foot-2 center was also foreign-born \u2013 he is a native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo \u2013 and long and lean. As good a defender as Ewing was, Mutombo may have been even more intimidating in the paint. Though another relatively modest scorer, Mutombo averaged 4.4 blocks a game over his final two college seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Denver Nuggets picked Mutombo No. 4 overall in the 1991 draft. He made an immediate impact that began with making the NBA All-Star team as a rookie. He played 1,196 regular-season games over 18 seasons. Ewing is 49-46 in three seasons, but he may now have an inside presence to build around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because Ryan Mutombo, the son of Georgetown legend and two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year Dikembe Mutombo, announced over the weekend that he has committed to play for Georgetown beginning next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryan Mutombo is a 6-foot-11, 235-pound prospect out of Atlanta. The 247Sports.com rankings list him as the No. 14 center and No. 80 prospect overall in the current senior class. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/30042472\/ryan-mutombo-son-dikembe-mutombo-follows-father-footsteps-committing-georgetown\">ESPN<\/a> ranks him as 15<sup>th<\/sup> and 94<sup>th<\/sup>, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The website said other schools in the mix included Florida State, Georgia, Stanford, and Tennessee. His decision to attend Georgetown upholds a tradition of legacy recruits.
