After all, O\u2019Neal had already logged three stellar seasons at LSU and earned the NBA Rookie of the Year Award following the 1992-93 season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/orlando-magic\/\">Orlando Magic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it turns out the O\u2019Neal\u2019s character, the lovable lunk Neon Boudeaux, had more in common with the future Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee than we realized back then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Blue Chips\u2019 was a movie about college basketball cheating<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"10 Ridiculous Expensive Things Shaquille O\u2019Neal Owns\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/--yhkb7g9-0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/shaquille-oneals-next-step-to-becoming-a-billionaire-hinges-on-a-mickey-mouse-idea\/\">Shaquille O\u2019Neal\u2019s Next Step To Becoming a Billionaire Hinges on a Mickey Mouse Idea<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former minor-league baseball player Ron Shelton has had a nice run in his second career as a Hollywood screenplay writer and director. Not surprisingly, he\u2019s gravitated toward the subject of sports multiple times, including writing and directing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/steve-dalkowski-immortalized-in-bull-durham-threw-110-mph-fastballs\/\">Bull Durham<\/a>, White Men Can\u2019t Jump,<\/em> and <em>Tin Cup<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the bunch, basketball-themed <em>Blue Chips<\/em> may have received the poorest reviews by critics. However, the film did have its positives. For starters, Nick Nolte did a nice <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bobby-knight-once-got-into-a-dispute-with-a-wrestling-coach-at-indiana-and-it-was-not-pretty\/\">Bobby Knight<\/a> impersonation, though he kicked a ball into the stands instead of throwing a chair across the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, Penny Hardaway was believable as Butch McRae, the big-city recruit whose mother had to be bought off with a house and a job in order for Nolte\u2019s character to sign him to a scholarship at the fictional Western University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there was Shaquille O\u2019Neal. One of the sub-plots in the script was the relationship between the coach and his estranged wife, with the dynamics changing as she agrees to tutor man-child Neon Boudeaux and then feels manipulated upon learning the emerging star had received illegal inducements to attend the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shaquille O\u2019Neal brought authenticity to his movie role<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blue Chips (3\/9) Movie CLIP - Meet Neon (1994) HD\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Jv_AlRfm998?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/shaquille-oneal-just-revealed-how-phil-jacksons-advice-helped-make-him-a-successful-entrepreneur\/\">Shaquille O\u2019Neal Just Revealed How Phil Jackson\u2019s Advice Helped Make Him a Successful Entrepreneur<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not as though <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/shaquille-oneal\/\">Shaquille O\u2019Neal<\/a> needed coaching for the basketball scenes. He was already in the NBA by the time <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheatsheet.com\/entertainment\/blue-chips-helped-create-the-shaq-and-penny-hardaway-magic.html\/\">Blue Chips<\/a><\/em> was filmed. However, other aspects of Ron Shelton\u2019s script also made it pretty easy for O\u2019Neal to make his character feel real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For one, O\u2019Neal\u2019s character ended up dropping out of Western University in order to enter the NBA early. That dovetails with Shaq\u2019s real-life experience. After averaging 13.9, 27.6, and 24.1 points a game in three seasons at LSU, he made himself available and was selected No. 1 overall by the Orlando Magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the tutoring that the movie character needed in order to gain his eligibility might not have been much of a stretch either. As pointed out by <a href=\"https:\/\/larrybrownsports.com\/basketball\/shaq-brags-sat-score-act-trivia-game-video\/118112\">Larry Brown Sports<\/a>, O\u2019Neal once bragged during an <em>Inside the NBA<\/em> telecast on TNT that he\u2019d scored a 780 on his SAT while in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For perspective\u2019s sake, the highest possible score at the time was 1,600 \u2013 and test-takers received 400 points just for showing up and spelling their name correctly. Still, he seems to have made it to this point in life just fine, beginning with a Hall of Fame basketball career that saw him average 23.7 points and 10.9 rebounds a game in 19 NBA seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, he transitioned seamlessly into his career as an analyst for TNT. He has also methodically built a business empire by investing wisely in the stock market, buying a piece of the Sacramento Kings, and making deals with Krispy Kreme and Papa John\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Neal\u2019s latest contract extension with Turner Sports expands his duties beyond commentary on TNT to give him a voice in project creation and production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, oh yeah, the man has educated himself rather nicely, too. He went back to get his undergraduate degree in 2000 and tacked on an online MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2005. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/05\/05\/sport\/dr-shaq\/index.html\">He later earned a doctorate<\/a> in human resource development from Barry University in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Like <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Sports7dotcom\/\"><em>Sports7<\/em><\/a><em> on Facebook.
