The fiery winner of 49 races had run-ins with a number of other competitors during his 18 seasons competing in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-is-the-nascar-cup-series\/\">NASCAR Cup Series<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart might well have accepted <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tony-stewart-confesses-hates-about-sport-scared-nascar\/\">offers to settle a few of the disputes<\/a> in a steel cage match, especially since he once famously put his own sport on a par with pro wrestling. It was an unflattering and controversial take, but it\u2019s unlikely Stewart was alone in thinking it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tony-stewart-was-a-three-time-nascar-cup-series-champion\">Tony Stewart was a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Best of NASCAR: Hot Mic! The Indiana native chalked up a number of victories across the board. One of his most impressive achievements involved becoming the only driver ever to win season titles in IndyCar and NASCAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart was only 20 years old when he won USAC Rookie of the Year honors in 1991. He captured three USAC series championships in the next four years to launch himself into the big time. Stewart raced the IndyCar Series full-time for the first time in 1997 and won the points championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, Stewart was a rookie with Joe Gibbs Racing. He made an impressive NASCAR debut with a fourth-place finish in the standings with the help of wins at Richmond, Phoenix, and Homestead in the final 10 races of the year. He also pulled off a slick double by placing ninth in the Indianapolis 500 and fourth in the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day over Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart nailed down his <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tony-stewart-won-final-cup-series-championship-with-crew-chief-he-fired\/\">first NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2002<\/a> and another in 2005. The final three victories came in the Chase for the Nextel Cup, too late to get him into the season-ending playoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going winless in the first half of the 2007 season did not boost Stewart\u2019s spirits, especially after he wrecked at Daytona and saw subsequent early races play out. The season marked the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Car_of_Tomorrow\">Car of Tomorrow<\/a> (CoT) for 16 events. Stewart\u2019s fuel pump failed while he was dominating at Bristol. In the third CoT race at Phoenix, Stewart was in command when a late caution flag helped hand the victory to <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/jeff-gordons-nascar-and-business-success-started-with-the-same-philosophy-drivers-seize-opportunities\/\">Jeff Gordon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late caution was the result of an accident, and Stewart lost his lead while pitting. He called it the only legitimate caution flag of the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart, who was 35 at the time, left town without raising a ruckus. But <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nascar-couldnt-resist-razzing-tony-stewart-while-honoring-him\/\">he teed off on NASCAR<\/a> later on his weekly radio show, alleging that caution flags were being used late in races to create excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like playing God,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cThey can almost dictate the race instead of the drivers doing it.
