What's legend and what's true isn't really clear, but what is evident is that Cobb was one of MLB's top stars at the time of his retirement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Cobb didn't play at a time when professional athletes made millions as they do today. The center<strong> <\/strong>fielder was able to parlay his earnings into quite a hefty payday, but it was due to a savvy investment decision he made.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-mlb-career-of-ty-cobb\">The MLB career of Ty Cobb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobb played in an era before the home run became as popular as it is today. During most of Cobb's career, home runs were a much rarer occurrence. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cobbty01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baseball Reference<\/a>, Cobb retired after 24 seasons and 4,189 hits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ty Cobb - Baseball Hall of Fame Biographies\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tz7cjRvaFmE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He spent most of his career as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/detroit-tigers\/\">Detroit Tigers<\/a>, though he did log time as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The slugger retired with a career batting average of .366, the highest career average of all time. He won an MVP Award, 12 batting titles, and a Triple Crown. Cobb was also part of the first class of Hall of Famers when the institution opened.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers are impossible to deny: Cobb was one of the sport's most influential figures from its early days. He set the standard for contact hitters after him, like <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/pete-roses-reckless-hustle-nearly-ruined-ray-fosses-career\/\">Pete Rose<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/where-is-japanese-mlb-great-ichiro-suzuki-now\/\">Ichiro Suzuki<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ty-cobb-s-philanthropic-efforts\">Ty Cobb's philanthropic efforts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobb left a complicated legacy. While rumors persisted about some uglier sides of his personality for years, it was proven that the man had a philanthropic side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cy Young, Rogers Hornsby, Ty Cobb - Wild &amp; Wonderful\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CGY_jNcJs0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wealthmanagement.com\/philanthropy\/ty-cobb-unlikely-philanthropist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WealthManagement.com<\/a>, Cobb set up a scholarship fund in his name. He believed all baseball players should receive an education before turning pro and saw to it that both of his sons attended Ivy League universities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Cobb's charitable efforts were largely helped due to the massive fortune he amassed. But believe it or not, baseball wasn't the source of much of Cobb's riches. There would be a much savvier financial decision he'd make that would help him in that regard.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-an-early-investment-set-cobb-up-for-life\">An early investment set Cobb up for life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing can be a tough gambit for professional athletes. If they trust their money with the right adviser, they can make it last for years. A mistake could leave them destitute. Cobb was a fairly successful investor, and one of his best investments came from a company we all know today: Coca-Cola.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/ty-cobb-greatest-pro-athlete-132519674.html\">Yahoo<\/a> article speculating whether Cobb was the most famous athlete investor of all time, he made over $491,000 during his playing days (the equivalent of around $7.4 million today). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Check from my check collection: This day in 1958, Ty Cobb writes a check to a Coca Cola bottling plant in Palo Alto, a few miles from his mansion. <br><br>At the time this check was written, Cobb was worth about $100 million in today\u2019s dollars \u2014 a large part from Coca-Cola stock. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/08vuv9hswl\">pic.twitter.com\/08vuv9hswl<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/darrenrovell\/status\/1404533649744318465?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobb died with over $12.1 million <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/curt-schilling-lost-his-entire-115-million-career-earnings-on-a-video-game\/\">in his investment portfolio<\/a> &#8212; equivalent to over $104 million today. In 1907, he bought 300 shares of stock in Coca-Cola. Over the next 20 years, he expanded that to 24,000 shares. When Cobb died, he owned $2.1 million worth of Coca-Cola stock.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coca-Cola wasn't the only winning company Cobb invested in. He also invested in a company called United Motors, which later converted to General Motors stock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cobb showed that the same acumen he displayed for baseball, he had for investing.
