Well, no one except Emmitt Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a wide-eyed, 21-year-old rookie, Smith actually predicted he would finish his career with the most rushing yards in NFL history. But when he shared his goal with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-irvins-love-of-winning-drove-him-to-snitch-on-his-dallas-cowboys-teammates\/\">Cowboys teammate Michael Irvin<\/a>, the Hall-of-Fame wide receiver just laughed in his face. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who's laughing now, Michael?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-emmitt-smith-made-a-bold-prediction-as-a-rookie\">Emmitt Smith made a bold prediction as a rookie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">DRAFT DAY SPOTLIGHT: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmmittSmith22?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EmmittSmith22<\/a><br><br>On April 22nd,1990 Emmitt Smith was drafted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dallascowboys?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@dallascowboys<\/a> in the 1st round 17th overall pick. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NFLDraft?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NFLDraft<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NQdhXxLB0N\">pic.twitter.com\/NQdhXxLB0N<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NFL Alumni (@NFLAlumni) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFLAlumni\/status\/989670464019750912?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 27, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cowboys chose University of Florida product Emmitt Smith with the 17th pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. He wasn't even the first running back taken in the draft. But Smith entered the league with an unmatched competitive hunger and lofty goals. He didn't just want to become the greatest Cowboys running back ever. He had even bigger dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cowboys legend spoke to fellow NFL Hall of Famer Morten Andersen on the <em>Great Dane Nation<\/em> podcast presented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vegasinsider.com\/podcasts\/gdn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VegasInsider.com<\/a>. He revealed his boldest prediction as a rookie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah. I told Mike [Irvin] one day, that night, I think we were going to play the Rams, and Mike and I were in a room, and we was just talking, and he said, \u2018Man, what you want out of this game? What you want to do?\u2019 I said, \u2018Michael, I want to become the all-time leading rusher,\u2019&#8221; Smith said on the podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-michael-irvin-laughed-in-emmitt-smith-s-face\">Michael Irvin laughed in Emmitt Smith's face<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emmitt Smith hoped <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-jerry-jones-sparked-an-angry-michael-irvin-to-launch-a-trash-can-at-reporters-in-locker-room-rant\/\">Michael Irvin<\/a>, a budding star in the NFL at the time, would support his goal. But that's not exactly how he reacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe looked at me, and he laughed in my face,&#8221; Smith said. Thankfully, he did eventually find a teammate who believed in his vision: defensive back James Washington. Smith explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c[Washington] says, \u2018Let me see what you\u2019ve got.\u2019 So he sees my paper, he sees my goal list, and he doesn\u2019t say nothing. He says, \u2018OK. It\u2019s good that you\u2019re writing down your goals.\u2019 And that was it. He walked out. Years later, he told me, he said, \u2018I knew something was going to be special with you because of what you just did.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said, \u2018Because I never saw many people do things like that. And to see the list that you were mounting up, I knew you had to have a focus and commitment. Smith finished his pro career with 18,355 rushing yards, the most in NFL history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-irvins-hall-of-fame-career-came-to-a-devastating-end\/\">Michael Irvin<\/a>, who couldn't help but laugh when Smith shared his prediction, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/michael-irvin-is-worth-15-million-but-refused-to-cash-his-first-dallas-cowboys-paycheck\/\">regretted doubting<\/a> that 21-year-old rookie. Smith explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYears later, Michael &#8212; Michael remembered as if it was just yesterday. It\u2019s like, \u2018This man wrote down the things that he wanted to do. This man told me he saw this and wanted to do this and I didn\u2019t join at the time and now look at him. This guy sees things that he talks about as if it\u2019s going to happen.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And lord knows it ends up happening.
