Today, stories of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/former-auburn-baseball-coach-hal-baird-had-the-perfect-quote-to-sum-up-the-immensely-talented-bo-jackson\/\">Auburn product's<\/a> heroics elevate him beyond the mantle of one-time sports stardom. His feats read <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bo-jackson-says-he-would-dominate-todays-nfl-id-probably-be-averaging-350-400-yards-a-game\/\">more like folk tales<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That's what the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/las-vegas-raiders\/\">then-Los Angeles Raiders<\/a>&#8216; other '80s star running back dealt with when the team snapped up Jackson. From the moment he first laid eyes on the multi-sport phenom, Marcus Allen knew he was looking at the future of his own position. The way he handled that confrontation is a surprising and powerful piece of NFL lore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-raiders-landed-bo-jackson-due-to-a-huge-mistake-by-the-tampa-bay-buccaneers\">The Raiders landed Bo Jackson due to a huge mistake by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson was ambivalent about playing in the NFL. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raiders.com\/news\/how-bo-jackson-became-a-raider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raiders.com<\/a>, he pulled away from the idea of playing football professionally despite clear signals he'd be the first overall pick in the 1986 NFL Draft. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bo-jackson-the-two-sport-all-star-athlete-may-have-been-a-member-of-the-tampa-bay-buccaneers-if-not-for-a\/\">sent a plane Jackson never asked for<\/a>, saying it was to pick him up for a physical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bo Jackson reveals which stories of his legendary athleticism were lies (2016) | ESPN Archive\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8Brn62nUlHM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It violated Jackson's NCAA eligibility, destroying his final season playing baseball in college. He felt this move intentionally diverted him from basketball to focus on the NFL full-time. When the Buccaneers offered him a five-year, $5 million offer, Jackson walked away from the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That's how the Raiders came to have an opportunity to get their hands on Jackson. Owner Al Davis laid his cards down face up. Unlike the situation in Tampa Bay, Jackson would be allowed to miss NFL games for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/why-bo-jackson-believes-there-may-never-be-another-two-sport-pro-athlete\/\">time in MLB with the Kansas City Royals<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis was looking for depth at running back and couldn't think of a better option than the borderline superhuman speed and size ratio <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bo-jackson-most-shocking-sports-feat-didnt-come-in-baseball-or-football\/\">Jackson offered<\/a>. The only problem: Marcus Allen was already putting in Hall of Fame-level work at the same position and had consistently done so since 1982, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sports\/article\/RAIDERS-NOTEBOOK-Classy-Allen-has-the-last-word-2597970.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SF Gate<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-marcus-allen-s-issues-with-the-raiders-did-not-affect-his-admiration-for-bo-jackson\">Marcus Allen's issues with the Raiders did not affect his admiration for Bo Jackson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The acrimony between Allen and Davis was entirely related to business. Allen knew he was underpaid, given his NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As players agitated collectively for fair free agency terms, Allen saw it as his responsibility to use his status as one of the best active RBs to demand a contract commensurate to his worth. The Raiders owner insisted on sticking to the terms of previous contracts as written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">32 years ago today, Marcus Allen rushed for 191 yards &amp; 2 TD as the Raiders routed the Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dyVgo94ZoX\">pic.twitter.com\/dyVgo94ZoX<\/a><\/p>&mdash; ESPN Stats &amp; Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESPNStatsInfo\/status\/690572142136528896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 22, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis reacted by dropping Jackson onto the roster. On the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/episode-19-james-lofton\/id1531363490?i=1000505261565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Great Dane Nation<\/em><\/a> podcast, Davis' teammate James Lofton described that legendary initial practice with Jackson. The pair watched in awe as the bulky Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/remember-how-dominating-bo-jackson-was-in-tecmo-bowl-on-nintendo\/\">ran with finesse and speed<\/a> unseen at the position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lofton turned to Davis and said, &#8220;There goes your job.&#8221; But Allen, always with his locker room despite his issues with Davis, wasn't phased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contract disputes never affected his dedication to playing the actual game. He went straight to Davis and offered to play at fullback, a position where he had ample experience in college. But Allen's career, a Hall of Fame run, was the better of the two in the end. Jackson's four years in the NFL ended unceremoniously <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bo-jackson-said-his-hip-injury-prevented-raiders-fans-from-hating-him\/\">with a brutal hip injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Royals were happy for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/deion-sanders-accomplished-something-2-sport-star-bo-jackson-never-did-vice-versa-both-things-no-other-athlete-history-ever-accomplished\/\">Jackson to focus<\/a> entirely on baseball, but a full hip replacement diminished his abilities greatly. He was cut in spring training and only made sporadic appearances over one year with the Chicago White Sox before leaving professional sports for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allen cut ties with the Raiders after the 1992 season, frustrated by Davis' insistence on keeping him in backup roles despite Jackson's absence. Enjoying new free agency rules, he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for his final five years in the league. Gus has his grandfather to thank for his early interest in baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs. He also grew up in Michael Jordan's Bulls heyday, so he'll never shake the NBA. Gus is into gaming as a hobby, particularly fighting games. In his view, the gaming world is the oldest esports scene, and following that growth helps with writing about the business side of sports, as well as any esports connections that come up in sports writing.
