{"id":1315349,"date":"2021-02-08T14:27:36","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T19:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/?p=1315349"},"modified":"2023-07-19T14:29:59","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T18:29:59","slug":"dale-earnhardt-jr-raced-in-a-ford-1-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports7.us\/news\/dale-earnhardt-jr-raced-in-a-ford-1-time\/","title":{"rendered":"The 1 and Only Time Dale Earnhardt Jr. Raced in a Ford"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With apologies to the TV commercial, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-jr-spent-190000-to-retrieve-1-of-his-dads-old-cars\/\">Dale Earnhardt Jr.<\/a> ranked right up there with baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie when it came to being associated with Chevrolet during his <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-is-the-nascar-cup-series\/\">NASCAR Cup Series<\/a> racing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While driving the No. 8 car for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in the first half of his career and then the No. 88 for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/hendrick-motorsports-has-made-it-all-the-way-back-after-a-tragic-plane-crash\/\">Hendrick Motorsports<\/a> from 2008-17, Earnhardt always competed in Chevys on the nation\u2019s biggest racing circuit. It costs top teams well more than $500,000 a week to compete over a full season, and prize money doesn\u2019t come close to footing the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where sponsorships and partnerships come into play. Advertisers want to align themselves with the best and most popular drivers. Team owners want to strike deals with auto manufacturers that can build cars, giving them an edge in a sport where the rules are designed to level the playing field. In a perfect world, teams, drivers, and partners forge long-lasting relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It certainly worked that way for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who came up through the ranks following his father. When Richard Childress Racing switched from Pontiac to Chevy in the early 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-sr-once-received-a-troubling-death-threat-because-of-his-dirty-driving\/\">Dale Earnhardt Sr.<\/a> signed on and never looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The influence rubbed off on Dale Jr., beginning with his Xfinity Series debut in 1996. He drove Chevys right up until his retirement from the NASCAR Cup Series after the 2017 season.  It worked out well for all involved; Earnhardt took the checkered flag 50 times in 773 starts between the two series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dale-earnhardt-jr-made-a-rookie-mistake\">Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a rookie mistake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dale Earnhardt Jr.&#039;s best career moments | Best of NASCAR\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9BZRzbJziOQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dale Earnhardt Jr. was an Xfinity Series newcomer in 1996 at the age of 21, competing in just one race that year. Most of the season was spent on the Late Model division in the Carolinas, putting to use the automotive knowledge he acquired while working as a mechanic in his father\u2019s dealership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Late Model schedule took Earnhardt to Nashville\u2019s Fairgrounds Speedway one weekend in 1996. Earnhardt owned his car, and it looked to be the class of the field during practice on the six-tenths of a mile oval. In a story retold by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascar.com\/news-media\/2018\/01\/07\/news-media20180107dale-earnhardt-jr-recounts-time-he-drove-petty-blue-no-3-ford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASCAR.com<\/a>, Earnhardt made the classic mistake: He took one last run even after being advised by his crew chief to shut it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure enough, a wreck in front of him forced Earnhardt to go low on the backstretch. Another driver slammed Earnhardt\u2019s Chevy at full speed, triggering a fire that destroyed both cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wasn\u2019t the big-time, where NASCAR Cup Series teams travel with backup cars. The very few drivers who did have an extra car on site were often testing their future ride or trying to showcase an old one that they might be able to sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnhardt was about to pack up and head for home when another driver made an offer that came with a catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bobby-hamilton-salvaged-the-weekend-for-junior\">Bobby Hamilton salvaged the weekend for Junior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s7krPvFa7r\">pic.twitter.com\/s7krPvFa7r<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Dale Earnhardt Jr. (@DaleJr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DaleJr\/status\/950031552511127552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 7, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobby Hamilton got his start by running his own Xfinity Series team in late 1988. By the time illness forced him to retire in 2006, he had won four times in the NASCAR Cup Series, once in an Xfinity car, and 10 times while racing in the trucks series. He was known in the racing community, and some others knew about Hamilton from his participation in filming for <em>Days of Thunder<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamilton was at the Nashville track the day <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-pulled-pistol-fired-due-to-racing-rivalries\/\">Dale Earnhardt Jr.<\/a> wrecked his Chevy, and it just so happened that he had an unused car sitting on a trailer. He offered it to Earnhardt, but there was a catch: It was a Ford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking, \u2018I can\u2019t drive it because it\u2019s a Ford.\u2019 But I want to race real bad,\u201d Earnhardt said, as recounted by NASCAR.com. \u201cSo, I\u2019m calling my dad, trying to see if I can get a hold of him and try to ask him if I can drive this Ford. It\u2019s a Petty blue, because Bobby, at the time, I think must have been driving for Richard in the Cup Series, and it had No. 43 on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t get a hold of dad, but I got a hold of dad\u2019s general manager. \u2026 He said, \u2018Yeah, go ahead and drive it. Just don\u2019t talk about it, and try not to make too big of a deal about it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others have raced it, but the No. 43 car will always be associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/richard-petty-won-200-nascar-races-but-crashed-and-burned-when-he-ran-for-political-office\/\">Richard Petty<\/a>, who won 200 NASCAR Cup Series races. By duct-taping over the \u201c4,\u201d Earnhardt\u2019s crew turned it into the No. 3 car \u2013 the number made famous by his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dale-earnhardt-jr-didn-t-get-the-storybook-ending\">Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn\u2019t get the storybook ending<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dale Earnhardt Jr. and family have emotional initial reaction to NASCAR HOF nod | Motorsports on NBC\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4TwEA6sPYLs?start=8&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his lack of familiarity with driving Fords, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a great run that day at Nashville\u2019s Fairgrounds Speedway. Approximately 150 laps into the race on the short oval, he had lapped all but one competitor. Earnhardt was on his way to victory when misfortune struck, and the transmission blew with under 20 miles remaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Earnhardt went home without the win \u2013 and Hamilton went home without the car.
