Along the way, however, he certainly needed a few pointers. Luckily, that's where <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-once-removed-the-confederate-flag-from-his-own-personal-truck-he-didnt-want-to-offend-anybody\/\">Dale Earnhardt Sr.<\/a> stepped in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-jr-takes-his-sandwiches-almost-as-seriously-as-his-racing-when-you-build-a-sandwich-its-like-building-a-model\/\">Dale Earnhardt Jr.<\/a> and his famous father didn't always have the greatest relationship, the Intimidator did offer his son one on-track coaching session. While Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are certainly one of the best pairings, things could have worked out much differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it's now impossible to imagine Dale Jr. as anything other than a NASCAR star, he didn't plan on following his father's professional footsteps. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-jr-confessed-that-the-only-reason-he-raced-was-to-have-a-relationship-wih-his-father\/\">he climbed behind the wheel <\/a>for a much more personal reason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just didn\u2019t have a relationship,\u201d the younger Earnhardt told\u00a0<a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4-rieo64yVM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graham Bensinger.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe didn\u2019t do a lot of hanging out. We didn\u2019t communicate much unless he was telling me where to stand or where to be or what to fix or what to clean up. We didn\u2019t go hunting together. He didn\u2019t take me on trips. Like when he would go do things, I was never like an idea or a consideration.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That, however, is where racing came in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe only reason I raced was to get closer to my dad,\u201d Earnhardt Jr. continued. \u201cThat was the only way I would. Nothing I did would register with him \u2026 and finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-jr-takes-fans-behind-curtain-infield-care-center\/\">when I started racing<\/a> and I won a couple of races, I noticed we would talk about it, and he\u2019d come in the shop and want to know what happened. On one occasion, though, he did share some wisdom with Dale Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe ended up going to Bristol the first time. That place is super fast. I had no idea what I was doing,\u201d Junior once explained on NASCAR on NBC's Facebook page, according to <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/nascar\/news\/dale-earnhardt-jr-nascar-daytona-quitting-retiring-dale-sr-death-killed-crash\/t3h1h1csxtx71c051x3t0vft7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Sporting News<\/a>. \u201cIn a Cup car with a little more power, I was having a lot of trouble. For the first time &#8212;\u00a0the only time I can ever remember &#8212;\u00a0Dad, in the middle of practice, got out of his car and got on the radio and coached me around the race track. \u2018Lift here. Get on the gas here.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While their interaction was still pretty brief, it made quite an impact on Dale Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was completely opposite of what I was doing,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;That little five-minute coaching session really worked at a lot of different racetracks, just the patience that he showed me with what I needed to be doing versus what I had been doing. How much information could anyone, even Dale Earnhardt Sr., impart in that short of a time? Without knowing the specifics of what was or was not said on that fateful day, it certainly seems like it made a difference for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-jr-reveals-why-hes-not-likely-to-ever-be-the-life-of-the-party\/\">Dale Jr.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While he may have had some issues with a Cup Series car during that practice session, Junior eventually hit his stride. Although he didn't find the same success as his famous father, he still won 26 Cup Series races during his time on the circuit. He also proved to be incredibly popular and built up a $300 million net worth along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his NASCAR career, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-sr-once-broke-his-hand-smashing-in-the-face-of-an-employee-who-betrayed-him\/\">Dale Earnhardt Sr. wasn't the easiest guy<\/a> to work with. On one occasion, though he made sure to take some time out to help his son.
