However, at one point in his life, it didn\u2019t appear that becoming a basketball star was in the cards. That was until an incident involving cake forced him to run from the cops and crawl through the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-charles-barkley-wasn-t-highly-recruited-in-high-school\">Charles Barkley wasn\u2019t highly recruited in high school<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Auburn unveils Charles Barkley statue\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BeNgyz6clRc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Charles Barkley ultimately had a great college career at Auburn. In 1983-84, he led Auburn to a 20-11 record by averaging 15.1 points per game, 1.8 blocks, and 9.5 rebounds. However, according to <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/news\/basketball-men\/article\/2021-02-17\/charles-barkley-college-basketball-stats-best-moments-quotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NCAA.com<\/a>, &#8220;Barkley wasn\u2019t heavily recruited until late in his senior year&#8221; of high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne day, I was 5-10, backup point guard, and the next year, I was a 6-5 power forward,\u201d Barkley said on a 2016 <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1-yl14_IEqY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode<\/a> of <em>In Depth with Graham Bensinger<\/em>. \u201cI kind of came out of nowhere. So, yeah, I didn\u2019t get to play a lot when I was younger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, the growth spurt helped Barkley tremendously, but so did an incident that forced him to run from the cops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-charles-barkley-became-a-basketball-star-after-running-from-the-cops\">Charles Barkley became a basketball star after running from the cops<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Charles Barkley: Running from cops scared me straight\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1-yl14_IEqY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In that interview with Bensinger, Barkley revealed that he started playing basketball after a scary incident with the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had started to hang with the wrong crowd,\u201d Barkley said. \u201cWe would go to the local stores and start stealing candies and pens. Actually what happened, in truth, we almost got caught by the cops one time. We didn\u2019t get caught stealing the pens and the candy, but we figured out [that] across town, every Sunday night, they would bring in a shipment of cakes for the week. So, we went there like every Sunday for a month or so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Sunday, though, ended all of Barkley\u2019s bad decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne night, the cops came out of nowhere,\u201d Barkley said. \u201cWe ran back into the woods, and I could hear the cops saying \u2018freeze.\u2019 We were crawling on the ground; I probably crawled 100 yards on my knees in the woods. It scared the hell out of me, to be honest with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This all led to Charles Barkley turning his life around and starting along a path that eventually saw him become an NBA star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember being terrified with the cops bearing down on me,\u201d Barkley said. \u201cI made up my mind that next day, \u2018I need to get myself together.\u2019 \u2026 I didn\u2019t want that lifestyle, so I just started playing basketball. I wasn\u2019t any good. At this point, I\u2019m still 5-10. But it kept me out of trouble. He then eventually became a star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barkley, who is now a Hall of Famer, earned 11 All-Star selections and scored as many as 28.3 points per game in a season. He also led the league in rebounds per game in 1986-87 with 14.6 and later won the league MVP award in 1992-93 with the Phoenix Suns by averaging 25.6 points per game and 12.2 rebounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his career, Charles Barkley averaged 22.1 points per game and 11.7 rebounds in the NBA for <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/76ers-owner-pat-croce-was-forced-to-fire-his-own-brother-for-committing-a-petty-crime-against-allen-iverson\/\">the Philadelphia 76ers<\/a>, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets.
