Beyond his motorsports success, the Intimidator built quite an image over the years: he was a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-sr-once-broke-his-hand-smashing-in-the-face-of-an-employee-who-betrayed-him\/\">tough, no-nonsense guy<\/a> who'd stare you down from behind his sunglasses and a bushy mustache. On one occasion, though, he briefly went without any facial hair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you read that correctly. At one point, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-sr-always-cringed-at-a-very-specific-compliment\/\">Dale Earnhardt Sr.<\/a> went without his signature mustache. And what prompted that change? According to quotes from the time, the Intimidator was trying not to drown during a tropical vacation with Michael Waltrip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dale-earnhardt-sr-had-a-legendary-nascar-career\">Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a legendary NASCAR career <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Top 10 Dale Earnhardt Moments in NASCAR | NASCAR Legends\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0EQewqMMF3A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/dale-earnhardt-sr-once-received-a-troubling-death-threat-because-of-his-dirty-driving\/\">Dale Earnhardt<\/a> had a pretty sweet mustache, facial hair alone doesn't make someone famous. During his time behind the wheel, the NASCAR driver also put together a legendary career that will stand the test of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although his father hoped that he'd find a different line of work, Earnhardt was drawn to the family business. He dropped out of high school and, in 1975, made his <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-is-the-nascar-cup-series\/\">Winston Cup Series<\/a> debut. Dale then began racing full-time in 1979 and promptly captured the series' Rookie of the Year crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some athletes can make a promising debut and then fade into the background, Earnhardt didn't slow down. He claimed his first Cup Series championship in 1980. From there, he only kept going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time his career came to a tragic end, the Intimidator had become the face of NASCAR. No matter his outfit, though, it's almost impossible to imagine the Intimidator without his signature mustache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you might imagine, Earnhardt took that facial hair pretty seriously. In fact, he wouldn't let just anyone trim his mustache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was intimidated by the Intimidator, to say the least,&#8221; Steve Ellsworth, Earnhardt's longtime barber, explained in 2015, according to an <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/racing\/nascar\/cup\/story\/_\/id\/13065723\/dale-earnhardt-jr-meets-dad-barber-nascar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN<\/a> story. &#8220;The first three times I cut his hair, I couldn't touch the mustache. He liked that big bushy mustache. I finally talked him into it, and he said, &#8216;Oh Lord! Wrangler's gonna fire me!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earnhardt wasn't fired, however, and did return to Ellsworth for another trim. It wouldn't seal above his mouth because of the mustache and water rushed in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than sit on the sidelines, Earnhardt decided to shave off his mustache right then and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Man, I was just drowning,&#8221; the driver explained. &#8220;I got up on the boat and shaved. [Then] I could go down about 10-12 feet and not drown.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dale Earnhardt's mustache, of course, eventually grew back.
