So, when the discussion about how <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kobe-bryant-nearly-dreaded-rival-become-head-coach-lakers\/\">Kobe Bryant<\/a> got away resurfaces periodically, we\u2019re cutting Coach K some slack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mike-krzyzewski-had-an-amazing-run-at-duke\">Mike Krzyzewski had an amazing run at Duke<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Coach Mike Krzyzewski Opens up about Coaching JJ Redick at Duke and LeBron + Kobe on Team USA\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZV0WFfADuh4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>College basketball fans have to go back to the John Wooden days at UCLA to come up with a dynasty more impressive than <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/coach-k-once-put-on-helmet-somersaulted-into-locker-room-to-teach-blue-devils-a-lesson\/\">what Mike Krzyzewski built<\/a> with the Duke Blue Devils. Krzyzewski took the Blue Devils to 13 NCAA Tournament Final Fours and won five national championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throw in the dabbling he did at the Olympics &#8212; coaching the U.S. men to Olympic golds at Beijing (2008), London (2012), and Rio de Janeiro (2016) &#8212; and it\u2019s understandable why <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/coach-k-retirement-discovery-confirms-painful-reality-of-his-legendary-career\/\">he earned induction<\/a> into the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/mike-krzyzewski-reveals-how-his-health-nearly-cost-job-and-marriage\/\">Coach K retired in 2022<\/a> after making it to his 13th Final Four and clocking his 42nd basketball season at Duke. The all-time winningest coach in men's Division I college basketball secured 1,129 victories during his time in <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/grant-hill-dared-to-trash-talk-michael-jordan-nba-75-event-about-duke-superiority-unc\/\">Durham, North Carolina<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just imagine how much better the Blue Devils could have been had Krzyzewski <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nba-draft-how-many-no-1-overall-picks-have-come-duke\/\">recruited Kobe Bryant<\/a>. (Yes, that\u2019s sarcasm.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-giving-up-on-kobe-bryant-wasn-t-mike-krzyzewski-s-worst-recruiting-mistake\">Giving up on Kobe Bryant wasn\u2019t Mike Krzyzewski\u2019s worst recruiting mistake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Maybe but Coach Smith stopped recruiting me. It was apparent by his senior season at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, that a great career awaited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, Duke coach <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/where-has-mike-krzyzewski-coached-besides-duke\/\">Mike Krzyzewski<\/a> says it was <em>too<\/em> apparent that Bryant would have a successful career. It\u2019s why Coach K says he barely lifted a finger in an attempt to recruit Bryant to the ACC school that was embarking on the first of 24 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament during Bryant\u2019s senior season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing on <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/coach-ks-ways\/id1498713408?i=1000513235021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Dream Team Tapes: Kobe, LeBron &amp; The Redeem Team<\/em><\/a> podcast recently, Krzyzewski said he watched Bryant in high school. The coach realized there was no chance he could pick college &#8212; even as a one-and-done &#8212; over the NBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen he walked into a gym, he walked in like [Michael] Jordan at a high school level,\u201d Krzyzewski said. \u201cHe could not only play the role during a game, he played the role before and after the game. He looked that good, he believed he was that good, and he was that good. But I knew he was never going to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, Bryant did not recall the recruitment process in quite the same way. In an exchange with a Twitter follower, Bryant seemed to suggest that attending college had been a possibility. He went on to suggest that Coach K had put some real effort <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/coach-k-offers-his-take-on-jon-scheyer-duke-blue-devils\/\">into recruiting him<\/a> even after North Carolina coach Dean Smith had given up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCoach Smith stopped recruiting me. He thought I would go pro and wished me luck.
