One of those men was Cedric Maxwell. While <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored\" href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-once-bailed-on-the-celtics-white-house-visit-saying-the-president-knows-where-to-find-me\/\">guys like Larry Bird<\/a> and Robert Parrish may have stolen most of the headlines, Cornbread was still a part of the team's success during the '80s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although NBA salaries were quite a bit different back then, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/rookie-larry-bird-shut-cedric-maxwell-up-without-saying-single-word\/\">Cedric Maxwell<\/a> still made plenty of money during his time in the pros. When the season was over, the big man liked to flaunt that wealth in a pretty unconventional way: watching construction workers do their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cedric-maxwell-made-quite-a-name-for-himself-with-the-boston-celtics\">Cedric Maxwell made quite a name for himself with the Boston Celtics <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cedric Maxwell Discusses the 1981 NBA Eastern Conference Finals Between the Celtics and 76ers\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RNRqukYmS7U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sports-centric city like Boston, you must be pretty good to make a name for yourself. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/cedric-maxwell-received-undeserved-award-because-of-red-auerbach\/\">Fortunately for Cedric Maxwell<\/a>, he showed plenty of talent during his time on the hardwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maxwell didn't play his college ball with a big-time NCAA program, though, choosing to hit the court for UNC Charlotte. He helped the 49ers reach the Final Four in 1977, however, and showed enough skill to become the 12th-overall pick of that year's NBA draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forward, of course, joined the Celtics. While he struggled during his rookie campaign, he burst onto the scene as an NBA sophomore, averaging 19 points and 9.9 rebounds per outing. Once reinforcements arrived in the form of Larry Bird, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/where-is-celtics-legend-kevin-mchale-now-and-what-is-his-net-worth\/\">Kevin McHale,<\/a> and Robert Parrish, Boston became a force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maxwell <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/how-many-nba-championships-have-the-boston-celtics-won\/\">won two titles with the Celtics,<\/a> putting in clutch performances on both occasions. In 1981, he took home NBA Finals MVP honors. During the offseason, though, he preferred to take things a bit easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1985, Sam McManis wrote an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1985-10-19-sp-15147-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LA Times<\/a> story that provided plenty of insight into the forward's mind. During his interview with McManis, the forward also made a few more comments about money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a very shy person,\u201d the forward explained when asked to describe the real Maxwell. \u201cNot the most sociable person in the world. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/cedric-maxwell-said-there-was-only-1-player-he-was-afraid-of-on-the-basketball-court\/\">Very intense and competitive<\/a>. Love to win. A lot of people think I\u2019m super outgoing. I am outgoing only to a degree. I\u2019m not an ego worshiper. And I like the simple things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That sounds pretty reasonable, right? Well, the forward wasn't done yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah, I like the simple things in life &#8212; like Mercedes and Porsches,\u201d he added with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McManis also asked Maxwell why he voted for Jesse Helms, a North Carolina senator who opposed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and other similar measures. \u201cBecause most of the bros back home don\u2019t make as much scratch [money] as I do,\u201d the forward responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, most of Cedric Maxwell's salary records have been lost to history. A <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1984\/10\/25\/Boston-Celtic-Cedric-Maxwell-ended-his-holdout-Thursday-signing\/5165467524800\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UPI<\/a> story, however, does report that he wanted a contract extension worth roughly $800,000 per season. Basketball Reference shows the forward earned $1.8 million across three campaigns from 1984-87, including one $830,000 sum from the Celtics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how much money he actually earned, though, Cedric Maxwell seems to have enjoyed his wealth.
