Magic Johnson and <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/tag\/larry-bird\/\">Larry Bird<\/a> met for the first time in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/ncaa-tournament-all-time-fantasy-starting-lineup-march-madness\/\">NCAA national championship<\/a>. The initial battle was an appetizer for the following decade as the pair became two of the greatest NBA players in history. They developed a fierce personal rivalry during the '80s that included three meetings in the NBA Finals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Celtics-Lakers already had an established rivalry. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/would-magic-johnson-or-larry-bird-be-better-in-the-modern-nba\/\">Bird and Johnson took it<\/a> to another level. There was a true dislike for one another. Expectations were understandably high with two of the nation's best players battling for the championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game lived up to the billing. <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-pointed-out-1-major-difference-between-him-magic-johnson\/\">Johnson scored<\/a> 24 points. Bird tallied 19. Johnson's Spartans came away with the 75-64 victory in what remains the highest-rated college basketball game in television history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/magic-johnson-admitted-larry-bird-only-player-he-feared\/\">Larry Bird admitted<\/a> that game was especially painful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You never get over that. It's impossible to get over it when you get your heart broken,&#8221; Bird admitted, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/news\/basketball-men\/article\/2019-01-20\/40-years-after-first-bird-vs-magic-showdown-1979-indiana-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NCAA<\/a>. &#8220;I knew going into that game that I was going to have to play the best game I'd ever play in my life, and I didn't do it. Bird averaged 21.3 points, made his first of 12 All-Star appearances, and won <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-winning-rookie-of-the-year-still-annoys-magic-johnson\/\">Rookie of the Year<\/a>. The Celtics lost in the conference finals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johnson finished his rookie season averaging 18 points. He made his first of 11 All-Star games and the All-rookie team. The Lakers defeated the 76ers in the NBA Finals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/magic-johnson-admits-his-relationship-with-larry-bird-was-fractured-because-of-his-hatred-for-the-boston-celtics\/\">Bird and the Celtics<\/a> and Johnson and the Lakers met in the NBA Finals on three occasions. Johnson won twice. Olden Polynice Explains Who's Better<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a recent episode of <em>A Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/magic-johnson-had-perfect-response-when-asked-about-larry-bird-true-weakness\/\">Magic Johnson admitted<\/a> there was a genuine hatred for Larry Bird. It just came with the territory. However, he said that all changed in 1985 when Converse asked the two to film a shoe commercial in French Lick, Indiana, Bird's hometown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We shot about three hours, so finally, they said it's lunchtime. I'm thinking I'm going to my trailer to have lunch, and he's going to his house. He turned to me and said, &#8216;Magic, my mom has prepared lunch for us at the house.' And when he threw his mother in there, you know I can't say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Now, we had never really broken bread, so I went up to his house, and his mother was bringing out all the food, and finally, she said to Larry, &#8216;Did you tell him yet?' And Larry said, &#8216;No, you tell him.' She turned around and said, &#8216;Magic, you're my favorite basketball player.'
