Shaq, when he was at his best, could dominate the interior like no other; Kobe, as we all know, could usually will his team to victory single-handedly. While those combined skill sets helped the two stars win three championships together, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/bill-russell-is-actually-the-reason-why-kobe-bryant-and-shaquille-oneal-stopped-fighting\/\">things weren't always happy behind the scenes.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the tension between <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/heres-what-kobe-bryant-said-to-shaquille-oneal-as-soon-as-they-met\/\">Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant<\/a> has been well documented, it seems like things came to a head in 2003. The LA Lakers, however, were ahead of the curve in the 1990s when they had<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/could-shaq-and-kobe-really-beat-lebron-and-anthony-davis\/\"> both Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant<\/a> on the roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Shaq started out on his own, making a name for himself with the Orlando Magic, he joined the LA Lakers in 1996; earlier that year, the team had <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/kobe-bryant-almost-landed-with-another-team-on-draft-night-that-wouldve-made-lakers-fans-sick\/\">selected Kobe Bryant as the 13th-overall draft pick.<\/a> Although the two men seemed like something of an odd couple and had some initial clashes, things would eventually turn the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Phil Jackson arrived in Hollywood and installed <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/phil-jackson-wasnt-the-first-coach-to-use-the-triangle-offense\/\">the triangle offense, <\/a>the Lakers truly hit their stride. With Shaq and Kobe looking like an unstoppable duo, the club rattled off three straight championships from 2000 through 2002. In 2003, though, things started to break down even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Bryant recovering from a knee injury, O'Neal publicly suggested that the guard pass the ball more; that comment kicked off a war of words, with the two stars trading barbs over who was the Lakers' top dog. Eventually, Kobe took things to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/news\/story?id=1648431\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESPN's<\/a> Jim Gray, Bryant criticized O'Neal's physical condition and leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But this is his team, so it's time for him to act like it. That means no more coming into camp fat and out of shape when your team is relying on your leadership on and off the court,&#8221; Kobe said. &#8220;It also means no more blaming others for our team's failure or blaming staff members for not overdramatizing your injuries so that you avoid blame for your lack of conditioning. Also, &#8216;my team' doesn't mean only when we win; it means carrying the burden of defeat just as gracefully as you carry a championship trophy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understandably, the big man didn't appreciate those remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mostly it was Shaq and Kobe didn\u2019t like each other, but it didn\u2019t affect them on the court,&#8221; then-Lakers vice-president of public relations Jim Black told <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2468658-an-oral-history-of-the-2003-2004-los-angeles-lakers-the-first-super-team\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bleacher Report<\/a> in 2015. &#8220;They would say something about the other, on or off the record, but it didn\u2019t become confrontational more than two or three times over the eight years. When Kobe gave the statement to Jim Gray where he went off calling Shaq fat and lazy, that was one of the times. There was one really bad one, early on. Brian Shaw had to pull them apart. Despite their differences, though, the two stars formed quite a bond during their time together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur names will be attached together for what we did,\u201d O\u2019Neal explained on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBAonTNT\/status\/1222314192138428416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1222314192138428416%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports7.us%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D1350736action%3Dedit\"  aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TNT<\/a> after Bryant's tragic 2020 death. \u201cPeople always ask about our relationship, and I tell them it\u2019s just like me and\u00a0Charles [Barkley]. You got two strong-minded people that are going to get it done that way. You\u2019re going to say certain things, [but] the respect will never be lost. When it comes to being inside the lines and winning, that\u2019s what me and him did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In sports, there are plenty of cliches about teammates becoming like family.
