It is a little more eye-catching when it is a top women\u2019s college basketball coach who makes headlines for a big-money move. That is exactly what happened this week when three-time National Champion Kim Mulkey left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/where-baylor-university-located\/\">Baylor University<\/a>\u00a0for the head job at Louisiana State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move shocked the college basketball world. Mulkey, at age 58, is in the prime of her coaching career. She previously gave no indication that she was interested in leaving Baylor. Money talks though, and the fact that her new salary is higher than one of the legendary coaches in the game proved to be an offer she couldn\u2019t refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kim Mulkey is going home to Louisiana<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kim Mulkey Introductory Press Conference\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P5HANdbUbBk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/lsu-tigers-erased-1-of-the-all-time-greats-from-past-and-future\/\"><strong>The LSU Tigers Erased 1 of the All-Time Greats From Their Past and Future<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mulkey was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/baton_rouge\/sports\/lsu\/article_2e535fb2-a5f2-11eb-ac1f-0762bff46982.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">born and raised in Tickfaw, Louisiana<\/a>, a very small town about 50 miles west of her new home in Baton Rouge. She attended Hammond High School where she led her basketball team to four straight Louisiana state titles. She was also the valedictorian of her graduating class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Mulkey stayed in the state for college, she did not attend LSU. She played point guard at Louisiana Tech University where she won two titles, including the inaugural women\u2019s NCAA National Championship. She would then go on to become an assistant coach and eventually the associate head coach at Louisiana Tech. Her Lady Techsters reached seven Final Fours and won the 1988 National Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kim Mulkey\u2019s record at Baylor was phenomenal\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img alt=\"LSU's Kim Mulkey Is Departing Baylor for a Reported $2.5 Million\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Kim-Mulkey.jpg?strip=all&#038;quality=89\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Kim Mulkey | Photo by Peter Forest\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2000, Mulkey was hired to coach the Baylor Lady Bears. The team perennially finished at the bottom of the Big 12 conference and had never gone to the NCAA Tournament. In her first season as head coach, Mulkey led the team to a 21-9 record and their first NCAA Tournament appearance. This was the start of two decades of success that included National Championships in 2004-05, 2011-12, and 2018-19. These were Baylor\u2019s only National Championships in basketball until this year\u2019s men\u2019s team win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2011-12 title came at the end of an undefeated season where the Lady Bears finished 40-0. That team included Brittney Griner, one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. Mulkey has also coached many other WNBA players such as Kalani Brown, Te\u2019a Cooper, Odyssey Sims, and Lauren Cox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mulkey\u2019s overall record at Baylor is 632-104, which gives her a winning percentage of 85.9%. In February 2020, she became the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/news\/basketball-women\/article\/2020-02-18\/baylors-kim-mulkey-becomes-fastest-division-i-basketball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fastest basketball coach in NCAA history<\/a>\u00a0(men\u2019s or women\u2019s) to reach 600 wins. She is also the only person in women\u2019s college basketball to win National Championships as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mulkey\u2019s new salary puts her on par with some big names<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kim Mulkey&#39;s deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LSU?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LSU<\/a> is set to pay Mulkey $2.5 million in year one and will increase to north of $3 million by the end of the deal, which runs through 2028-2029, an LSU official tells <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAthletic?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheAthletic<\/a>.<\/p>&mdash; Brody Miller (@BrodyAMiller) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrodyAMiller\/status\/1387054612075663362?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 27, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/uconn-paige-bueckers-iowa-caitlin-clark-best-ncaa-tournament-matchup\/\"><strong>UConn\u2019s Paige Bueckers vs. Iowa\u2019s Caitlin Clark Will Be the Weekend\u2019s Best NCAA Tournament Matchup<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a report in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadvocate.com\/baton_rouge\/sports\/lsu\/article_b03066ba-a6fb-11eb-b788-afee4af6cdce.html\">The Advocate<\/a>, Mulkey\u2019s new contract will pay her $2.5 million in her first year. Following that report,\u00a0Brody Miller from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrodyAMiller\/status\/1387054612075663362\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Athletic<\/a> tweeted that the contract figure would rise to over $3 million by the end of the deal. This is the same amount that the LSU men\u2019s basketball coach, Will Wade, makes annually. It is also more than triple what the last women\u2019s head coach, Nikki Fargas, made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The big news from a women\u2019s college basketball perspective is that the annual salary is higher than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/geno-auriemma-calling-out-immature-connecticut-team-paige-bueckers\/\">University of Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0salary. The iconic UConn coach currently makes $2.4 million annually. This puts a lot of pressure on Mulkey to deliver the first-ever women's basketball title to Baton Rouge. The program did reach five consecutive Final Fours from 2003-04 to 2007-08 but has never made the final game.
