The coach referred to the football writer and his site as \u201cannoying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Florio is kicking that feud up a notch by crushing Shanahan and the 49ers for trading up to draft QB Trey Lance and the \u201cgratuitous mystery\u201d around it. Shanahan said he laughed at media who thought he would draft Alabama QB Mac Jones over Lance, and that what set Florio off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-san-francisco-49ers-traded-up-for-the-no-3-pick-in-the-2021-nfl-draft\"><strong>The San Francisco 49ers traded up for the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Is it crazy to think that it might be quarterback, quarterback, quarterback.....quarterback?&quot;<br><br>The crew breaks down how the blockbuster trade between the Dolphins and 49ers will shake up the 2021 NFL Draft. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OhZQMSrfFm\">pic.twitter.com\/OhZQMSrfFm<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Good Morning Football (@gmfb) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gmfb\/status\/1376500665866944516?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 29, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The feud started with San Francisco making the aggressive move to trade up in the 2021 NFL draft. The team traded from its No. 12 spot up to No. 3. To do this, they sent the Miami Dolphins the No. 12 pick, a 2021 third-rounder, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, per <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/49ers-acquire-no-3-overall-pick-from-dolphins-miami-gets-no-12-pick-two-future-f\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NFL.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While trading up in the first round\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/trading-justin-fields-proves-chicago-bears-never-learn-lesson\/\">for a quarterback isn\u2019t advisable<\/a>, it did ensure the 49ers got their pick of Lance, Jones,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/justin-fields-contract-guarantees-18-8-million-becomes-1st-top-2021-draft-qb-sign\/\">or Justin Fields<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the trade, there was lots of intrigue around whether Shanahan and the Niners would take Lance or Jones. Lance was the most exciting prospect. However, analysts like <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/zach-wilson-better-trevor-lawrence-chris-simms-quarterback-rankings\/\">PFT's Chris Simms<\/a> speculated that Jones fit better with Shanahan's offense. The theory was that Jones is similar to Kirk Cousins, the QB the now-Washington Football Team drafted when Shanahan was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/nfl-are-coaches-kyle-shanahan-and-mike-shanahan-related\/\">offensive coordinator under his father<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/why-kyle-shanahan-laughed-nfl-220952310.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAD1PZ_0wAWWBDwzWXGTozWCqESS4-ap4Hdh6AnnwwCJAxyXvft6pHdej9LrW50O_Xl0ky-pcJJ_N1F2UMmAI8n6G_Z45WAMg\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PFT<\/a> reported that Shanahan scoffed at that notion in a recent interview, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I do laugh at . . . that everyone thinks that they know exactly what I want at quarterback because I thought we had a chance to get [Kirk Cousins], the number one free agent quarterback who was going to be on the market in our second year, and since we did, people just assume that\u2019s how I would draw it up, which if you draw it up, obviously you\u2019re going to give the guy everything. I do believe that you have to be able to win from the pocket in this league as a quarterback or it will catch up to you. The NFL analyst leading the way on the 49ers picking Jones bandwagon was Florio\u2019s PFT colleague and Shanahan\u2019s college teammate at the University of Texas, Simms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florio started his attack on Shanahan, writing, \u201cI think the 49ers have freaked out a little bit (or a lot) after whiffing on Mahomes in 2017 and Tom Brady (who wanted badly to play for his hometown team) in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The writer then suggests that Shanahan didn\u2019t actually know who he was taking when he traded up. He wrote that the whole thing was an \u201cill-advised guessing game\u201d and \u201ca piss-poor exercise by the franchise in crafting fan and media expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florio finished his critique of Shanahan with a flourish, writing, \u201cIt sure feels like the 49ers have f&#8212;ed this up, and it feels like (given the likelihood that Garoppolo will be the Week One starter for the 49er and given the very real possibility he\u2019ll stay healthy all year like he did in 2019), they may f&#8212; it up some more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shanahan-is-still-giving-mixed-signals-about-his-qb-situation\"><strong>Shanahan is still giving mixed signals about his QB situation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kyle Shanahan explains that while Jimmy G remains the 49ers&#39; starting QB, Trey Lance will have a chance to compete when ready<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vgOT2INw5r\">https:\/\/t.co\/vgOT2INw5r<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/C1pwGwaigC\">pic.twitter.com\/C1pwGwaigC<\/a><\/p>&mdash; 49ers on NBCS (@NBCS49ers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCS49ers\/status\/1403799638273110020?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 12, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With training camp for the 2021 season on the horizon, Shanahan seems no closer to deciding who the 49ers QB will be in the upcoming season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The head coach said, per <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/bayarea\/49ers\/jimmy-garoppolo-remains-49ers-qb-starter-trey-lance-has-shot\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC Sports<\/a>, that \u201cI definitely see it as Jimmy is the starter,\u201d but also he\u2019s not ruling out Lance winning the job. There\u2019s even a report from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2648639\/2021\/06\/14\/49ers-trey-lance-mac-jones-kyle-shanahan\/?source=twitterhq\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Athletic<\/a> that Shanahan looked into trading for Aaron Rodgers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kyle Shanahan\u2019s dad, Mike Shanahan, became a legendary NFL coach because he won two Super Bowls with John Elway. When he went to the Washington franchise, though, he had a revolving door of QBs that included Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman, John Beck, Robert Griffin III, and Cousins, none of which led the team to incredible heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did Kyle finally find his Elway in Lance or, is the 2021 draft pick just another mediocre QB that the coach will move on from quickly?
