He became one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/draft-bust-darko-milicic-failed-in-the-nba-but-found-his-calling-as-a-farmer\/\">biggest busts in NBA draft history<\/a>, but it wasn\u2019t for lack of confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milicic's draft position didn't overwhelm him at all. The No. 2 overall pick is particularly dicey and features some of the biggest busts in recent memory. In recent years, second picks like Marvin Bagley III, Jabari Parker, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Derrick Williams, Hasheem Thabeet, and Michael Beasley have all disappointed to different degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these players stand out in quite the same way Milicic does, though. It\u2019s not because they were demonstrably better than the 7-foot Serbian. It\u2019s because of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-happened-to-the-top-5-picks-from-the-2003-nba-draft\/\">the other draft picks around him<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After James and Milicic, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade were the following three picks. Just looking at this list brings to mind the classic <em>Sesame Street<\/em> song, \u201cOne of These Things (Is Not Like the Others).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milicic will always be inextricably linked to four generational Hall of Famers, which makes his failure stand out even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chad-ford-says-milicic-s-confidence-didn-t-match-his-reality\"><strong>Chad Ford says Milicic\u2019s confidence didn\u2019t match his reality<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe were going to draft Carmelo and then all of a sudden they decided on Darko.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FinZFCuV8J\">https:\/\/t.co\/FinZFCuV8J<\/a><\/p>&mdash; SLAM (@SLAMonline) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SLAMonline\/status\/1175190401554108416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 20, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NBA draft expert Chad Ford joined\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/love-letter-to-chris-paul-plus-chad-ford-on-his-latest\/id1433966613?i=1000527542035\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Ryen Russillo Podcast<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and shared stories about the prospect whom he is also forever tied to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford regaled Russillo with stories of how the Pistons saw Milicic workout by pure coincidence and fell in love with the big man\u2019s skills and shooting prowess. He also said that, while his analysis didn\u2019t influence Detroit to take the future bust, he does live with being wrong about the player. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI personally thought he was worthy of the number two pick in the draft,\u201d Ford admitted. I personally &#8212; if I had been a general manager &#8212; would have taken [Milicic] over Bosh or Dwyane Wade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russillo chimed in with a story about Milicic getting (and driving) a new car without an American driver\u2019s license to illustrate that there was \u201csome disconnect stuff\u201d with the No. 2 pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford agreed, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Yeah, and look, there\u2019s some ego involved too. He read the hype, and Darko was a confident dude. Whatever you want to say about Darko, he would argue to your face, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m better than LeBron James\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Forde continued by relaying an anecdote about the time he and Milicic saw an advertisement for a Pistons preseason game versus James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The ad prominently featured James but didn\u2019t mention Milicic. The rookie couldn\u2019t understand why this was the case.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-pistons-have-a-chance-to-get-the-top-pick-right-in-2021\"><strong>The Pistons have a chance to get the top pick right in 2021<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"qme\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/letitbeknown?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#letitbeknown<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DetroitPistons?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DetroitPistons<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CMIIs6j7xz\">pic.twitter.com\/CMIIs6j7xz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Isiah Thomas (@IsiahThomas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IsiahThomas\/status\/1407757161023868929?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to drafting Milicic, the Pistons actually had a pretty impressive track record drafting in the top three picks. They took future NBA All-Star Jimmy Walker No. 1 in 1967. The other three top picks all made the Hall of Fame. This includes Bob Lanier (No. 1, 1970), Isaiah Thomas (No. 2, 1981), and Grant Hill (No. 3, 1994).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Detroit is once again on the clock early as the team won the 2021 NBA Draft lottery for the No. 1 overall pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several \u201ccan\u2019t miss\u201d prospects are at the top of this year\u2019s deep and talented draft. The team is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/cade-cunningham-only-wants-play-1-nba-team-team-not-want-him\/\">reportedly keeping its options<\/a>\u00a0open by considering USC\u2019s Evan Mobley and Jalen Green from G League Ignite. Still, most agree that consensus No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham out of Oklahoma State will be the selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/cade-cunningham-no-longer-compares-himself-luka-doncic-weird-now\/\">Cunningham is an American version<\/a>\u00a0of Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic. He brings impressive shooting range, solid ball-handling, excellent playmaking skills, and can defend.
