However, had the NCAA allowed college athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness (NIL) during his college days, Barkley would maybe be even wealthier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what does Barkley think about the NCAA\u2019s latest ruling? He recently shared his biggest concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-college-athletes-can-make-money-off-their-name-image-and-likeness\">College athletes can make money off their name, image, and likeness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The NCAA clears student-athletes to pursue name, image and likeness deals | First Take\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wtT_lKoH8dA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, college athletes have been unable to make money off their name, image, and likeness. They weren\u2019t able to receive anything for signing their own autographs, they couldn\u2019t do sponsorships, and they saw schools make cash from selling t-shirts and jerseys that represented them in some way, whether it had their actual names or just their jersey numbers on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 1, though, the NCAA\u2019s new NIL ruling went into effect, as athletes can now make money through sponsorships and other ventures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things are still a bit confusing, as some states don't have NIL laws yet, and certain restrictions will vary based on the school and its location. He could have been pretty wealthy in college had the NCAA been under its current NIL legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Barkley has some major concerns about the new ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hate when people tell young Black kids, &#8216;getting a free education is nothing,'\u201d Barkley said on the July 2 episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LD4yqhyEFto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Dan Patrick Show<\/em><\/a>. \u201cGetting a free education is a really, really big deal. I hate when people tell Black kids, \u2018Well, they\u2019re not giving you nothing.\u2019 \u2026 Getting a free education is a really big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former NBA MVP then brought up his next concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey act like everybody in college now is going to start rolling in the dough, and I\u2019m saying, \u2018Well, that\u2019s not true,\u2019\u201d Barkley said. \u201cNobody\u2019s going to be buying the offensive lineman\u2019s jersey; he\u2019s not gonna get a car deal. Now, the quarterback and the running back, and maybe a star defensive player, they\u2019re going to make some money. \u2026 Yeah, Charles Barkley would have made a lot of money in college, probably Chuck Person. But that\u2019s really pretty much it on our team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued: \u201cWhat really bothers me and scares me about the whole scenario, Dan, is there\u2019s gonna be so much resentment from my other teammates. They\u2019d be like, \u2018Damn, Charles is selling jerseys. He\u2019s got a car deal. We work just as hard as him.' [It would have been the] same thing with Bo Jackson. The offensive lineman, he opens up all the holes for Bo Jackson. If Bo Jackson is making all this money, and the offensive linemen who actually do all the work, they\u2019re not making a dime, I think there\u2019s going to be great resentment and jealousy on these teams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ncaa-athletes-are-already-making-cash-thanks-to-the-new-nil-ruling\">NCAA athletes are already making cash thanks to the new NIL ruling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"College basketball players on NCAA ruling that allows them to cash in\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SECGwO60woo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Barkley might be right. Players might actually get jealous of their teammates during this new era of college athletics. But whether Barkley or anyone else likes it or not, student-athletes are already starting to bring in the cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2021\/07\/02\/master-p-hercy-miller-signs-2-million-deal-after-ncaa-rule-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TMZ Sports<\/a>, Hercy Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/rap-legend-master-p-fix-zion-williamson-situation-new-orleans-pelicans\/\">Master P<\/a>\u2019s son who will play basketball at Tennessee State, signed a $2 million deal with a technology company. Arkansas wide receiver Trey Knox, on the other hand, now has a sponsorship with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PetSmart\/status\/1410655683561902083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PetSmart<\/a>, and Auburn quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CQxadSLLoXr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bo Nix<\/a> has a sweet tea deal. Fresno State women\u2019s basketball players Hanna and Haley Canvinder also started a partnership with Boost Mobile, per <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/ncaa-nil-fresno-state-cavinder-twins-boost-mobile-endorsement-female-athletes-benefit-103459408.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yahoo Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what Barkley and other former players\u2019 concerns are, college athletes are starting to cash in on the NIL ruling already.
