Whether he was playing a <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-had-best-time-golf-course-playing-18-holes-without-saying-single-word\/\">round of golf<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/larry-bird-was-so-competitive-turned-autograph-signing-into-race\/\">signing autographs with the Dream Team<\/a>, Bird wanted to win at everything. This competitive streak extended to the NBA Three-Point Contest as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird won his fair share of the All-Star Weekend events, but toward the end of his career, injury kept him away from the shooting exhibition. Even hurt, Bird still had the perfect trash-talk comeback when new winner Craig Hodges tried to challenge his long-distance shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-larry-bird-won-the-first-three-nba-three-point-contests\"><strong>Larry Bird won the first three NBA Three-Point Contests <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Larry Bird Wins 1988 3-Point Shootout in Warm-Up Jacket\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MrE_NeoQQEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The NBA put in the 3-point line in the 1979-80 season, or, as it is better known, Larry Bird\u2019s rookie year. It wasn\u2019t until the 1986 NBA All-Star Game that the league added the Three-Point Contest, then called the Long-Distance Shootout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inaugural competition featured Bird and Hodges, as well as Dale Ellis, Sleepy Floyd, Kyle Macy, Norm Nixon, Trent Tucker, and Leon Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird faced off against the then-Milwaukee Buck Hodges after he beat the Dallas Mavericks\u2019 Ellis in a shoot-off. The former Cal State Long Beach guard only managed 12 in the final round while Bird scored 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1987 version, Bird again made the finals against the <a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/what-happened-to-former-all-nba-star-detlef-schrempf\/\">Mavericks\u2019 Detlef Schrempf<\/a>. He started hot, hitting eight in a row, but finished with just 16 points. Schrempf wilted against the Legend, though, and only managed 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bird\u2019s greatest 3-point shoot-out performance came in the 1988 finals. Against Dale Ellis, now with the Seattle Supersonics after one of his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/who-is-the-most-traded-player-in-nba-history\/\">seven career trades<\/a>, Bird struggled in the final round. Needing 15 to win, the Celtics great only sunk five shots in the first three racks. He was back in 1990 to go for his fourth title. Unfortunately for him and NBA fans, the Legend was experiencing some of the back problems that would ultimately end his career, and he didn\u2019t make the finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without Bird in his way, Hodges finally broke into the win column after the Indiana Pacers' Reggie Miller's last ball went begging.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the contest, a reporter asked Hodges if the victory was diminished by Bird\u2019s injury, according to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/sports\/2015\/02\/larry-bird-coldest-trash-talking-stories\/three-point-contest\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Complex<\/a>. The guard, who averaged 22.7 minutes per game that season \u2014 the high mark for his\u00a0<a  href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/craig-hodges-tore-into-michael-jordan-for-some-of-his-comments-in-the-last-dance\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">time in Chicago<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 replied by saying when Bird was healthy, \u201cHe knows where to find me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That quote got back to Bird, whose body might have been diminished, but not his quick wit. The former Indiana State star let reports know that he did indeed know where to find Hodges, answering, \u201cYeah, at the end of the Bulls\u2019 bench.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bird-and-hodges-are-the-only-three-time-nba-three-point-contest-champions-in-history\"><strong>Bird and Hodges are the only three-time NBA Three-Point Contest Champions in history <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Craig Hodges knocking down 19 straight shots in the 1991 NBA 3-Point Contest! <br><br>Craig also won 3 straight NBA 3-Point Contests! <br><br> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6cL1MpsSVz\">pic.twitter.com\/6cL1MpsSVz<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ballislife.com (@Ballislife) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ballislife\/status\/1224440920260542465?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 3, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the trash talk between the two sharpshooters, Bird was congratulatory toward Hodges after he won in 1990. \u201cYou\u2019d have to say Craig Hodges is the three-point king,\u201d Larry Bird told the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-xpm-1990-02-11-9001130203-story.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago Tribune<\/a>. \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t in the cards for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the banter, the three-point specialist and the all-time great have something else in common. They are the only NBA players ever to win three (and three consecutive) NBA Three-Point Contests. Mark Price, Peja Stojakovic, and Jason Kapono all have two in a row. <a  href=\"https:\/\/sports7.us\/warriors-star-steph-curry-isnt-the-goat-shooter-according-to-a-veteran-nba-marksman\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stephen Curry<\/a> and Jeff Hornacek both have two non-consecutive wins, although Hornacek didn\u2019t get a chance between his two victories due to the NBA lockout in 1998-99.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Three-Point Contest records of note include Hodges sinking an incredible 19 shots in a row in 1991 and Curry scoring 31 points in a round in 2021. That number broke Hodges and Kapono\u2019s record of 25 points, but he did it with a full rack of money balls, which was a recent innovation, per\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/warriorswire.usatoday.com\/2021\/03\/07\/stephen-curry-wins-3-point-contest-nba-all-star\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst Three-Point Contest performance occurred in the 1990 event at which the Bird\/Hodges dustup took place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who\u2019s the player who only managed five total points?
